Think they were retro-fitted for something. Thought it was funny that JGL's character thought a Miata was a cool old car to drive.

There is a lot of talk of vagrants and crime in the movie. Looks like America is in a bit of decline/large underclass exists and china isa nice place on the rise. (jeff daniels character alludes to this, future Joe's Asian wife/home). So i figure alternative fueled vehicles are primary but the lower class have to rig them up all shitty like. Also solar powered if America cant access enough gas.
