Saw an ad for this on LA Sportsman and thought some of you OB ballers would throw in for a good cause.

"A Child's Wish" Charity Raffle

Not too shabby with 4000/1 odds.

Oh yeah, if I win that boat, I'll sponsor a Tigerdroppings' OB fishing trip.

Thanks for posting that! I'm in for a chance.

an emotional escape from the reality of their everyday fight.

I know this feeling, facing it everyday myself. Just small getaways take a ton off my mine.

It's March 10th, the last day of the New Orleans Boat Show down in the Superdome.

I bought tickets about two weeks ago and was hoping that no one else would notice the raffle.

Seriously, though, the winner will still have to shell out about $20k in taxes and fees to keep the boat. Perhaps no one else should buy a ticket. Just donate cash to the foundation.

That seems a bit steep, I think they valued the package at apox. $65,000.
My advice, hire (if you don't already have one) a good CPA.

You have to pay sales tax and registration fees at the declared value of the boat. You also have to pay income tax on the winnings at a rate of 25% of declared value. The income tax alone is more than $16k. There is some offset on the income tax for sales tax but I'm not sure how that works out. By my estimate you will have to pay about 30% of the value of the boat for sales and income tax, title and registration.

I still bought 2 tickets.

20K for a brand new Contender is still pretty sweet.

Would want to keep it, but I'm not sure what the wife would say.
Hopefully, I'll get to cross that road later

Just bought a ticket. It's going to a good cause even if I don't win. Thanks for the link

You do have to pay sales tax on it, which is nearly $6,000. However, if you win and say the total 1099-Misc they send you is $65,000 and you sell the boat for lets say $50,000, this becomes your Cost of Goods and you'll only have to pay income taxes on the $15,000 difference. So depending on your marginal rate..the tax damage could be minimal.
