I thought 10 yards for first downs were actually measured to the link where it clips into the pole, not the pole itself. So maybe it wasn't as bad as people think?

I'm 99.9% sure it's to the plane of the stick. I once saw a ref take out a card and slide it down the stick. The ball barely moved and that's how they said it was a first down.
