Samuel L. Jackson still pissed about not winning for Pulp Fiction (over Landau)

quote:

He lost to Martin Landau’s Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood. When I asked if he thought he should have won instead Jackson was refreshingly candid.

“Yes I do. I really don’t know many people who can not only remember Ed Wood but remember what Martin Landau did in it,” he said but added he was told it was more of a life achievement kind of award. “You know they were saying ‘Martin’s been nominated a few times and you’re going to be around for a while. Don’t worry.’ I was thinking I didn’t know it was a thing where if you get nominated for a few times you automatically get one. I thought it was supposed to be about impact.”

Sam on Oscars...

And sadly despite his great performance in Django Unchained...I dont expect him to be nominated (I think Waltz or Leo should win...but Jackson deserves at least a nom imo)

And yes he should have won in PF....despite a great performance from Landau in Ed Wood..

What a jackass. It's not a popularity award - or shouldn't be - for coolest mofo. It's for acting.
quote:

Martin Landau who won Best Actor in a Supporting Role for playing Bela Lugos

One of the best acting jobs EVER. Easily outshines, Pulp Fiction and Jackson's gone-toting, bible-quoting, no swine-eating, bum.

As Landau tells the story of the phone call he got from Jack Nicholson telling him it was the best acting job he'd seen in a long time...and Landau said to him..."well it was a tribute to Bela Lugosi...and Jack responded:

"It was a tribute to acting."

Jackson can go screw off - actually hope it doesn't win jack this year. Yelling doesn't equal acting.

Note to Samuel Jackson: people are telling you that Landau won it as a lifetime achievement award because you are a sore f'in loser and they are patronizing you to appease your enormous ego.

Other than Travolta, there was no performance in Pulp Fiction that was even worthy of an Academy Award Nomination.

Though I liked Samuel L. Jackson's performance in Pulp Fiction, I honestly thought Landau's performance in Ed Wood was fantastic. It's one of my favorite acting performances of the past 20 years.
Jackson doesn't have a ton of range as an actor but he's still really likeable. It's a shame that as an actor he couldn't see the merit in Landau's performance.

With Pulp Fiction being one of my favorite movies of all time I do believe that Landau's performance in Ed Wood was very deserving. Do I like Ed Wood? Absolutely but it doesn't come close to Pulp Fiction however from an acting perspective Landau shouldve won.

Haters gonna hate.

Jackson is such a great actor that Cannes invented the Best Supporting Actor Award for him (Jungle Fever). I'm just glad someone's honest about wanting to win.

Glad to see some honesty, but Sam Jackson isn't a pillar of acting. In the one role I can think of where he stepped out of his yelling a lot and basically being "the angry black man," he was terrible. I'm thinking specifically of the Red Violin. He was fricking terrible in that. And he wasn't exactly great in Star Wars, either. The guy just isn't a great actor. He is deservedly type-cast, imo.

I might agree with him, but he's basically been playing that character ever since. If Morgan Freeman had won and not him, he wouldn't be saying anything.

It wouldnt have been a "Lifetime Acheivement Award" if Morgan Freeman won though.
(Not saying it was for Landau...he was very deserving as well)

Also...I think Morgan Freeman should have been nominated for "Best Actor" that year...not Supporting. But thats another argument altogether.

Actually the guy who should have Best Supporting Actor that year was Chazz Palminteri for Bullets over Broadway.

No, they are saying that because it happens all the time with the Oscars. Do you really think Scent of a Woman was Al Pacinos best acting job? The Departed was Scorsese's best moive? Come on, those were straight up, we fricked up, you guys should have won a long time ago, so here you go awards. And there are many other examples.

Personally I thinking great acting is over rated. Unless someone is really bad (Sophia Copolla GF III) or completely out of place (Keanu Reeves in Dracula) at a certain level its fine.

ETA: I just realized the 2 examples i gave were movies directed by FFC, which was purely by accident

Actually I find a lot of GREAT ACTING! to be distracting. I far prefer more subtle roles in which the actor isn't nearly as showy. I've made this argument before, but it's why I loved Benjamin Button so much - Brad Pitt really pulls off a difficult role by almost standing outside the movie.
