Beer Brewing Question - Growlers

I've got a couple of one gallon growlers from cigar city here in Tampa. They have a screw on cap. Can I use this for bottling?




Also, how do I make my own labels?

Sure. Just sanitize the cap and the bottle properly. It will carbonate just like a bottle will.


ETA: You know, I've done this with the flip top growlers but not with the screw cap. I bet it could work, but as others below have mentioned it may not hold pressure all of the time. I have used the flip to to bottle-condition successfully. I would try the cap, but YMMV.

Cool. That's what I figured.

What's your normal routine for sanitizing regular 12 oz bottles? So far I've run them through the wash once and will probably do it a second time. Is that sufficient?

No...

tried this already with an abita growler and they didn't carbonate.

Flip top stone growler carbonated just fine though.

Rinse with starsan right before beer goes in them.

If they never carbonate in the first place it won't matter.

I typically run bottles through the wash, once with soap and then once to rinse without soap, heat-dry on. It gets hot enough to kill nasty bugs in there. I do that right before it's time to bottle.

Will you be doing this from a previously-carbonated keg or by natural refermentation in the growler? If the latter, it may not hold pressure over the weeks required to condition, but if filling with carbonated beer it will hold pressure fine for a week, but it will probably be oxidized.

I have the airlocked container still sitting in my closet. It's been past 3-5 days, so it's past fermentation. I decided just to let it sit for the full three weeks and then I will bottle.

You'll be using priming sugar then bottling I assume?

If so, I think the concern is that screw-tops won't hold pressure enough to carbonate the beer... the CO2 will just leak out.

You'll need to cap bottles to get it to carbonate.

Yup. Is it safe to let the beer sit in the original container for 3 weeks or do I need to bottle it right after fermentation?

Safe, yeah, as long as it's airtight. Sitting on the dead yeast for too long can start to bring out some bad flavors though. It's best to either bottle when it's ready or at a minimum transfer to a sanitized secondary and leave the yeast cake behind.

It'll be a week this Saturday since it started fermenting. So, I'm guessing I should just bottle it come this Sat?

I've bottled using a growler before. It blew up real good. Growlers are not as strong as beer bottles. The pressure from the caronation buildup is too much for growlers.
