Added Pics! No 9mm. Bought the last shield .40

I'm buying (hoping to at least) my pistol this weekend.

First, what else do i need? Any recommendations for a holster? I want to CC on a regular basis. Anything else a "must have" or something i should look into?

Also, ammo. Is there a good brand of target rounds? Blazer, Tulammo, American Eagle. Are these all shit? Is there a good and cheap brand of target ammo?

Last, which ammo should I actually use for it? (The gun isn't rated for +P)
Federal HST?
what grain?

anything else im forgetting? I want to get everything on saturday.

I would try a couple diffent rounds for your good stuff. I went with hornady critical defense. My ruger handles it well and I like the round. On target ammo, whatever is cheapest. I've bought a ton of different ammo, just shop price. Will prob come out better buying bulk though. Congrats on the new gun

Bought the shield for my gf, getting some trigger work done this weekend.

Getting a new crossbreed holster for it, I use crossbreed for my 1911 and it works great.

I just shoot whatever cheap 115g FMJ for target, usually Winchester white box, but after watching tnoutdoors on YouTube do ballistics tests, I have 115g HP Speer Gold Dots for safe and carry. He uses 124 +P Speer rounds, but the standard 115g Speer loads handled very well, and I have read that you get more velocity out of smaller barrels with lighter grain rounds. That 115g Speer got 17 inches of penetration!

And maybe order a couple more mags, it only comes with two

I think it will handle +p just fine. May be wrong but I think most defense rounds are +p anyway.

Whatever you can find. It absolutely doesn't matter. The only real debate is steel vs brass cases. The steel is a bit harder on the gun but I've shot it through everything I own and it's no problem. Just don't make it too regular of a thing.

Are you sure it isn't +p rated? I didn't think a S&W product would only accept standard pressure.

I would snag some Gold Dots like someone else suggested. But other good hollow point rounds:

Federal HST (as you listed)
Federal Hydrashok
Winchester PDX1
Winchester Ranger T
Remington Golden Saber bonded
Hornady XTP
Hornady Critical Duty

There may be a few others I'm missing, but those are the most popular ones that I prefer.

Awesome, congrats.

As far as brand/grains for defense, if you have an extra hour or so, go to youtube and look for TNOutdoors9. He tests pretty much every kind of load you can find in ballistics gel. Fun to watch and you might see something you like.

for example...

Tnoutdoors9 40 test of Gold dot

GL,
Lots of good info already re: range ammo and sd ammo so I'll skip that.

As far as holsters for cc, that depends on HOW you carry the gun. Like most folks, I carry mine inside the waistband (IWB). I prefer an IWB holster that has the "tuckable" feature. This allows one to tuck their shirt tails between the outside of the holster and the inside of the waistband, completely covering the gun while wearing a tucked shirt. I find that I'm wearing my shirts untucked now, but it's still good to have the tuckable feature in case one needs to tuck their shirt tails. It's taken a while, but I'm finally getting away from a lifetime of feeling like I'm not dressed unless my shirt is tucked!

I've got a number of IWB holsters. I can recommend Woolfe Gun Leather (I use the "Lone Wolf-T" for a 1911 Commander) and Side Guard Holsters (I use the "Tuck Clip" to carry a Kahr CW45). I use a "Southern Sidekick" from R. Grizzle to carry a Kel-Tec PF9.

For a small and light gun like the Shield, you make find single clip holster (like the "Tuck Clip") will work for you. Single clip holsters are a little easier to put on. I think single slip holsters w/ the clip offset from the gun (like the "Tuck Clip") make for a thinner package than those that have the clip in line w/ the body of the gun ("Southern Sidekick").

I also use a Remora clip less IWB holster sometimes if I'm beltless, e.g. shorts or sweat pants. Mine is the older variety that's not tuckable.

Crossbreed holsters are well-liked as far as hybrid holsters go (Kydex body w/ leather backing), but I'm more fond of leather.

Whatever holster you get, be sure you get a QUALITY belt designed to carry a holster. Don't spend $60 on a holster and then expect a $15 belt from Wal-Mart to suffice. For casual belts, I like the Wilderness Instructor brand. For leather belts, I've got some from LA Police Gear (they were free w/ an order) and Little Bear Leather (out of business). Most holster makers also make belts.

You'll prolly wait at least 3-6 wks for a quality holster to be made. The maker can tell his lead time if his web site doesn't already list it.

Don't forget to get some cleaning supplies for your gun. Keep it simple and buy something like Break Free CLP or Eezox that can be used to clean, lubricate and protect your gun. Depending on the gun, may also need some gun grease.

Tell us how your gun shoots and include some pics!

Great info!!

Question: I got hoppes 9 solvent and rem oil (and some hoppes oil)

Do I need to clean or just oil it?

I picked up a cheap $10 iwb holster for now (until I order a good one). My first handgun purchase. Im pumped to put some rounds through it tomorrow

It stripped VERY easily. Took me 2 minutes (and I read everything twice to be careful)

1. There is no +p rating for .40 S&W ammo.

2. Yep, HST = really good stuff. Any grain bullet in HST is fine. (Hydra-Shok and Golden Saber were good, in their day -- outdated now).

Don't know why, but most of the compact, single-stack 9mm guns cycle best w 124 grain ammo.

High capacity magazines may become scarce soon.

The biggest reason is that most malfunctions are caused either by the magazine itself or can be easily fixed by a quick tap rack new magazine.... that's why.

The weakest link with any semi-auto pistol is the magazine.

Some malfunctions such as double feeds are likely caused by the magazine

PP,
I agree w/ you entirely. I always keep some magazines on my Amazon wish list!
OTOH, I don't understand why Bama thinks otherwise.
