re: Whiskey/Bourbon/Scotch appreciation thread

Ever since I have found this Benchmark 8 I have been saving myself over $300 a month on Bourbon. It is amazing for the price. For those that haven't tried to you need to, its made by Buffalo Trace and is only $18 a handle. Its smoother than most Bourbon, there is little "bite", but damn is it great in old-fashioneds and even straight up it is great. I can say without a doubt it is the best bang for your buck.

ETA: if you go to the Buffalo Trace site they show all of their products and the awards they have received and Benchmark has beaten Pappy Van Winkle in almost every spirits competition over the last 2 years.

Read my edit, it smokes Pappy at competitions. Yes it is very inexpensive, yes it comes in a plastic bottle but still it is AMAZING. Its probably the same shite as their high end stuff just without the marketing. I swear if you try it you will feel like a fool for spending so much in the past, I know I feel like an idiot for doing so.

Crazy you say that. Some guy I know was telling me a month or so ago about how that's all he drinks now and I waste my money on anything else. Kinda just assumed he was full of it. Guess its worth a taste/blind test.

It is so true! There is a 5 star restaurant/bar right by my house that is known for its cocktails, they paid out the arse to get the best bartender they could find and this guys resume would blow your mind, and he is the one who told me all about it when I asked. He said he wished he could use it as their house bourbon because it is cheaper and better but they can't because not enough people would know the name. Its so funny because it is so cheap and comes in a plastic bottle, at least when you get a handle, but it is so good! The only place I found it in AZ was Total Wine and More, I don't know if you have those, but it is worth finding. Definitely do a blind taste test, maybe even with friends. I almost feel like buying 100 bottles just to have because there is no way it can stay SO DAMN CHEAP for long.

I've drink quite a few handles of benchmark in my days but pappy is a whole different animal. Completely different mashbill my baw

I know it is different, but it is also at least 10x the price. As far as the awards I went to the Buffalo Trace site and over the last 2 years Benchmark is right there with Pappy when they are at the same competitions, it even beat them at a lot. Take it FWIW, I am not a judge, but in blind taste tests people love it....

I wouldn't be suprised if it's real good. I have not had it but will. I know old charter is some good stuff too I have enjoyed. It's not about how much it cost it's about what's in the bottle. There are some expensive things that I would never drink again.
