And so on. Before I knew the impact of my own pretentiousness, I’d contributed to the mania. The marketing has amped up America, too: I spent a good portion of a recent Sunday evening staring down the overdressed packaging of the Basil Hayden’s I was working on. The metallic crest, the faux-antique lettering, the distiller’s signature wrapped over the cork — the entire bottle looks like the get-up for some sort of steam-punk bluegrass superhero.

Met a buddy at Churchill's after work yest and brought home a bottle of Rock Hill Farms... Very good stuff.

Thought I would bump this one (after the fog in my head cleared a little) to list our tasting menu last night.

My head hurts too much to do a complete write-up right now, but have to say that the 1835 received surprisingly good reviews.

We are going to a St Patricks parade party up here in Jersey today. Every town has their own parade leading up to the big one in NYC. I personally don't call it a parade as they don't have floats or throw anything. Anyways, we went to the liquor store by the house last night and the Irish guy who owns it recommended we bring a bottle of Coole Swan Superior Irish Cream. Imported directly from Ireland and has Single malt Irish Whiskey in it, fantastic stuff.
I haven't read through this entire thread but did see a bottle of Pogue, anyone know anything about this stuff?

I'm very new to whiskey, but I visited the Staley Mills Farm and Indian Creek Distillery in New Carlisle, OH yesterday. They just started producing rye whiskey this past December in the original copper stills used there from the 1820's until prohibition.
After tasting it, I had to buy a bottle (loved the spiciness!) and it was bottled in front of my eyes; batch 5, bottle 1. It was a pretty cool experience.

It was out of my collection I've been putting together over the past couple of years. Let the record reflect, my guests were some of my usual beer drinking buddies-there was no way the Pappy 15 or 20 was coming out.

shite i wouldnt have pulled out the Jefferson Presidential Select 18 yo , Rock Hill Farms, or the Four Roses!

I agree. Only a few select friends of mine, who have proven to be worthy enough, are allowed to taste those.

yea, last time a friend was inquiring about the "fancy bottles" i pulled out a bottle of Four Roses and poured him a couple fingers in a glass and he shot it... i laughed and said "well you'll never touch any of these again"

A friend of mine who loves rye said this was his favorite, so I picked up a bottle. 80 proof is as mild as a rye can be, so I am interested to try this. Will post a review after I crack it open.
This thread has lost a little momentum but hopefully it will pick back up again. I had an idea that I wanted to share. Since we are all enthusiasts of fine whiskey, and we are probably living in different parts of the country, maybe we can start a bourbon exchange program via this thread. I live in Birmingham and have access to a few craft whiskies like this and others, and would be happy to trade for other bottles that are tough to find around here.
Would anyone else be interested in this?

I had a friend come over the other night. Wanted to drink some of my "fancy" bourbons since I was drinking a glass of Four Roses at the time. I opened my cabinet and was starting to go through my stash. He then asked, "You have anything to mix? I can't handle it straight."
I gave him Wild Turkey 101 that I got for free...

Just realized I hadn't posted about my new Favorite Bourbon Ever: Four Roses Small Batch Limited 2012. Ho-lee shite. I find myself usually agreeing with Sour Mash manifesto, and when he called this the best bourbon of the year I knew I had to find it. I finally spotted some at Coquette, who has 4 bottles of the stuff (@ $20/drink). It put a grin on my face from ear to ear and now I'm sad I can't find bottles of it anywhere. If anyone has a line on some I'll do a mail-order swap - my local Shreveport stores specialize in Evan Williams Green Label, but I can probably find something a little more unique.
Another one I bought based on SMM was the Rittenhouse Rye, which SMM called "the best $20 whiskey in the world" and I have to disagree. I found it pretty plain.

I'm HOPING to have a bottle of this on Thursday... The single barrel is one of my favorites and I've heard the limited is even better.
Agree on sourmashmanifesto... I always look to see if he has reviewed something before I try a new one. His reviews are pretty spot on.

I'm a huge Four Roses Single Barrel fan and recently tried the regular small batch and loved it too. Probably the best ~$30 bourbon for my money. I noticed that the single barrel went up from $38 to $42 in my store this month.
