| Used Vehicle Question...... (Posted on 12/19/12 at 7:56 am)
I have a paid for 2007 Toyota Tacoma with 104,500 miles. 4 Door Prerunner Long bed. I was offered $13,000 for it the other day. I have an opportunity to get a 2005 GMC Yukon with 99,400 miles and after TTL come out about $500 ahead on the deal. Looking for the advice/opinios of the Money Talk board. Swap vehicles and come out $500 ahead but for 2 yr older model. Or just stay put...

Numbers wise, yes. Guess it depends on what you want to drive.

If I were in your shoes, I'd keep the Toyota. They make a better vehicle than GMC, especially considering the years that you are looking at.

Are you the only owner of the Toyota? If not, how long have you had it? 5k miles and $500 isn't enough for me to take on an unknown risk like a used vehicle. If you really need to upgrade, then maybe it means more to you for the bigger vehicle. Also, that $500 will disappear with the decreased mpg.

Stay with the tacoma, no question. I'm not saying it would be stupid to trade, but it would be stupid to trade. Three things to consider: resale value, reliability, and gas mileage. Look into those for both vehicles and you will see that it is a no brainer.

100,000 miles from now, that GMC will be getting towed across the border for a complete strip down or engine rebuild so they can sell it in Mejico. 100,000 miles from now, you'll notice that your Tacoma probably burns a quarter of a quart of oil between regular oil changes. Once your past 100K miles, Toyota is considered just being broken in. Stay with the Tacoma...

there is a reason why the toyota is worth more of a % of its original value than the GMC is, keep it

No way in hell I would make that trade. Especially if you've owned the Taco for a while and know where it's been and how it's been maintained.

I've found a need for a truck at least twice a week for the last 3 months.

Update on the deal....I have found a private buyer for my 2007 Tacoma for $14500. I could make the same trade.... My 2007 Tacoma with 105k for a 2005 Yukon with 99K and now come out $2500 ahead after TTL Does this change the opinions of the money talk board???

Cashwise you may have come out better but IMO value wise you wouldn't. You would end up with an older vehicle that is just about used up. And you gave up a newer vehicle that has years of useful life left.

Why do you want out of the tacoma? It is twice as reliable as that yukon. But it sounds like you really want the yukon. If thats the case then get it. Just also be prepared to pay for a LOT or repairs.
