Starting in 2014-2015

A football Super League featuring the best teams from Russia and Ukraine could be launched in 2014, top Russia football officials speculate.

The idea of creating something similar to ice hockey’s KHL in football was first voiced by Gazprom CEO Aleksey Miller and it seems to be gaining popularity among Russia’s top football officials.

The replacement for the Russian Premier League is primarily aimed at attracting more interest in the competition and consequently increasing the clubs’ revenue to help them meet new UEFA financial fair play rules.

CSKA Moscow president Evgeny Giner suggested the league’s first season could be played 2014-15 at the earliest.

Representatives of Zenit St. Petersburg, Anzhi Makhachkala and the Russian Premier League also backed the plans.

UEFA “has said it will allow the unification of championships,” Giner stated, adding he expected the European governing body to allow the countries involved to keep their current quotas in European competitions.

“We need to make it so there is fan interest, sponsor interest, TV interest,” Giner also stressed.

A study group is expected be set up by the end of the year to design a format for the new league and decide which countries to include.

Depends on the Ukrainian. Catholic Ukrainians almost universally hate Russia. Orthodox Ukrainians are pretty mixed. Same with the non-religious.

There a large Russian speaking minority in Ukraine, but Ukrainians are extremely proud of their independence from Russia. Ukrainians have a separate cultural identity and language from Russia.

It would be a culturally abnormal move for the Ukrainian FA to agree to this merger.

I wouldn´t call it needed, I´d call it necessary.

Makes great sense.

I can see even the most anti Russian Ukrainians supporting this move. For example Dynamo Kyiv and Spartak Moscow have one of the greatest rivalries in sport history. They are the top two winners of Soviet Cups and since the breakup have played much less regularly.

I wonder how they will decide which teams get an invite and how they do promotion/relegation.

But with the Italian league losing momentum, this could be a top 3-5 league in Europe very soon.

Russian League may be fairly close to top 5 in Europe right now.

[link=(tcoef2013)]Uefa club/league rankings for this season[/link]

So Russia is not quite in the top 5 but Ukraine is pretty close actually- that is if you think this ranking is any better than another arbitrary ranking of leagues

Link does not work, but I believe they are both top 10.

I prefer to use the TN Bhoy Coefficient. All Catholic-backed clubs are automatically better than non-Catholic football teams.

shite, will fix when not on my phone. Ukraine was like 6 and Russia was like 9, I can't remember. Spain 1 Germany 2 decent drop off then England smaller drop off to Italy and others.

Does this work??

Ah nice, much easier to read. The other one just has the leagues further down the list. I just copied it from an article I read, didn't explore the site too much
