I am going to get little angus a new rifle and have narrowed it down to three choices.
Remington 700 sps buckmaster 7mm-08
Savage axis youth 7mm-08
Weatherby vanguard 308
I am leaning towards the 700 but for some reason I really like the Weatherby. Has anyone here shot a 308 with reduced recoil loads? If you have what would you compare it to recoil wise? Any experiences good or bad with any of these? TIA

How old is the steer? and what size? (height/weight)

I had a Remington Model 7 when I was a youngen (6-7 years old) it was great.

I recommend either the Model 7 or 700 if he can handle it

I couldn't get a shot on the first deer I had a chance at because the deer was too close and the rifle was too long for me, couldnt aim down from the stand enough. Thats why we got the 7

7mm08

I use my kids 7mm08 more than my own rifle. Sweet shooting gun....so much so I want a browning full size 7mm08 for me.

I just don't need to reach out 300 yards with my old 270 anymore...

The remmington managed recoil shells are money for 7 and 8 year old kids...and they drop deer in their tracks.

I had the barrel ported on my daughter's 7mm-08 and she shoots the full (not managed recoil) 140gr rounds fine. It was worth it to get the port and deal with the noise in order to shoot the full round. You can shoot it one handed. Kicks like a Daisy BB gun now. Sent it here to get it ported. Mag-na-port

I highly recommend it. Kids can shoot real bullets and not worry about recoil. I also drilled the stock out and filled it with about a pound of lead.

Do you think that 7mm08 won't reach out to 300 yards if needed?

Not much seperates it from the 270 win.

I will never own a ported rifle.
The added noise can cause flinching just as bad as the actual recoil.

I would suggest the 260 Rem. if ammo were more readily available.

I thought about that but I am pretty sure he can handle the 7mm 08. He can shoot a 20ga with 3 inch mags and it doesn't bother him. Just wondering where the 308 compares recoil wise. Like I said I am leaning towards the remington but i held the weatherby yesterday and out seemed like a fine rifle.

Is he able to shoot a full sized .270, or any other preferred caliber? I only ask because in 3 years he definitely will be able to. Then you'd have to buy him one anyway.

At that age, get him a full size 30-06

youth 7mm-08 is small for him

Get either a youth 700 or model 7 in 7mm08. Full sized stocks are everywhere for when he outgrows the youth length stock, and he'll never outgrow the caliber.
