Please, don't kill me. TIA.

I realize this is more of an offseason topic but since we're pretty much done for the season except determining draft position, I think this can be a legitimate discussion.

First of all, I love Brees. Obviously, see avi. The topic of this thread is when is the best time to acquire our future QB? It will be to our benefit to have a QB sit under Brees for a few years, but these days it's a stretch to use a draft pick on a QB when our D is the worst ever.

How many years should we wait to draft our future QB? How long do we want him to sit under Brees and learn before Brees retires? Let's just, for all intents and purposes, assume Brees will retire at the end of his current contract.

Also, I doubt this is the case for anyone, but just in case it is, would anyone consider Daniel our QBOTF?

I'd say another 3 years, depending entirely on where we are picking and who is available. You want him to sit for about a year or 2 behind Brees.

Not a bad question.

With the recent immediate success of QB's coming out of college, I think the Favre/Rodgers way is gonna be unpopular for a while. No team wants to draft a guy high and pay him first round money to ride the bench, and guys like Luck and RGIII have shown its possible to come in and have good success as a rookie.

I dont think we even worry about this for another 3-4 seasons, but it will be interesting to see what direction the Saints ultimately go in.

If Matt Barkely slips to us, we must take him and groom him for the near future.

Payton will develop the talent, not Brees.

Then I would say next draft or the one after at the latest. And pick a stud out of college; not a project.

I think Aaron Rogers sat on the bench 4 years behind Brett before he played.

Here's my obligatory "I hope Andy Dalton gets sick of Cincy and comes here" plug. Heady QB who is a good guy off the field much in the Brees mold... I think he would flourish with Peyton coaching him.

Why draft a qb? Why not just wait till Brees decides he's done and get one who already has NFL experience. Peyton won't be here and there will be someone else's offense on the field. I wouldn't waste a pick on a qb

From another one of my posts.

quote:

I think we have a 4 to 5 year window. We've got time to build a defense if done correctly.

John Elway won Superbowls at age 37 and 38. Jim Kelly went to Superbowls from age 33 to 36. Favre went to the NFC Championship game at age 40. Steve Young was vieing for championships at age 36-37. Kurt Warner went to a Superbowl at age 37. Marino made his last real run at the age of 37.

Brees is 33
I think we have 2 to 3 years before we have to discuss heir apparent IMHO.

if we're sticking with his contract ending in 2016 then 2015 if there is foresight that the end is that near. The old let them sit on the bench and learn approach is becoming a relic of the past. The contract costs for a high draft pick is too spendy to pay for a bench warmer more than a year. Secondly, the QBs coming into the NFL are obviously more pro-ready with the growing sophistication of the college game.

Phillip Rivers will prolly be too old and gone by then to have. Maybe SD can draft another guy to develop for us before taking him as a UFA.

Barring some major injury I would guess Brees renegotiates and extends further before 2015 ($26mil cap hit). I'm thinking he plays at least to 37 minimum (2016) and could push to 40 (2019) or beyond.

Next year would be a good time to draft another qb.

Wouldn't this change with the rookie pay scale though? Now it's almost worth drafting a late 1st to mid 2nd rounder to let sit for two or three years to develop.

Look at the cost to get a good QB. The Colts had a terrible season and got a good QB, but it won't be a season like they are accustom to. Washington gave up tons of picks to get RGIII. Carolina had to draft first overall to get their QB. And none of these teams is a superbowl contender.

On the other hand, the sit on the bench types like Eli Manning, Aaron Rogers and Philip Rivers have been consistently good NFL QBs.

And what does drafting a Christian Ponder, Andy Dalton or Blaine Gabbert get you?

Not saying you are wrong blues, but I think it's a debatable issue. I do agree that a lot of the QBs are more NFL ready than they used to be though.
