Ya know I've actually thought about that. But I doubt he's last to the 3rd or 4th round or so where I'd want him. I absolutely do not want an offensive player with our first two picks unless there is an absolute can't pass at OT

Purely my own speculation. Loomis usually brings in a free agent or two to fill needs whether studs or just fillers. A large part of that IMO is to accomodate BPA in the draft. Sometimes a strong BPA may not fit the team needs precisely.
I count a solid WLB as still high on the need list. Casillas has had some flashes but it seems he cannot stay on the field from endless injuries. I wouldn't mind Vilma back renegotiated even with diminishing skills. His 2013 $6.5mil cap hit however is untenable IMO.
When looking at the list of known UFA OLBs I see only two as real answers for the Saints. Connor Barwin would be great but very high dollar. I think he's a pretty sure franchise tag too if no new deal in Houston. Phillips though having played in a 3-4 is by no means is limited to that. He is extremely fast and great in pass coverage. He'll be 32 also so he won't command a a crazy money or long term deal. He ranks pretty high on my list of high quality of play to ratio of low public recognition. Kinda like a Colston of LBs. Brees and Sproles can put the "c'mon on down here with us and get a Lombardi" sales pitch on him too.

Here's one we haven't discussed... Manti Teo
He could be a BPA on the board when they pick. I think Lofton is entrenched at MLB. But Hawthorne had played more WLB than SLB in Seattle. IF Teo could grade out as a viable OLB that could be possible.
Depends on the draft spot too. If ending up 8-8 and a pick around #20 then Mosley could be a BPA if he declares.

Austin prolly the top guy in the Sproles-Harvin-Rainey small quick dynamic mold but I dunno if he even makes the 1st Rd. Good fit for skills but not personnel. Sproles-Morgan-Moore-Cadet currently provide all that he is.

I agree with the Sproles comparison but he's much more dynamic than the other 3. He's basically a young Steve Smith.

I completely agree with Blues, we can't talk about absolutes right now. Still too much to unfold: bowl games, combine, medical evaluations(Daquan Bowers), personal workouts. IMO, he's a borderline first round talent. A luxury pick that a team at the end of the first round could take a chance on.

Anybody here know LBMichael Mauti from Mandeville that played at Penn St?
His dad was a backup WR and KR for the Saints in the late 70s.
He has had three season ending knee injuries and off the charts intangibles. He definitely would be limited to inside or SLB. I wouldn't mind a son of Saint Saint local boy for a mid/late round pick.

But, I saw pretty consistent ability of him to work efficiently in space against running backs and te's. This last statement is part of the reason, I've been lauding Cj Mosley. Mosley was incredibly fluid in space on te's and rbs. The worst I saw him look were the times where he was matched up with the slot receiver. If we can't get one of the top pass rushers, I would like to try and find someone competent in covering those match-up nightmares. thought Hawthorne would bring some of that and maybe the injury just derailed any hope of a good season. Whatever the case, a coverage LB is my next need after pass rusher.

They tried to address the LB situation last year with FA Hawthorne and Chamberlin, both guys got hurt so we still havent seen what we got with them. Do they wait another year to see what they can do when healthy? Not sure.
This is a tough year to guess what postion they going after in the first, lots different ways to go( DE, DT, LB, OT, DB)

Chamberlain back no doubt to me cuz he's cheap enough ($1mil). He wasn't counted on to be a starter but more of a ST & role player.
Hawthorne back IMO cuz A.) methinks he still isn't 100% healthy towards performance grading, B.) it's his first time doing SLB (maybe WLB next yr), and it would be cap prohibitive to cut him (app $9.5mil in accelerated bonuses)
Vilma is the big question. Love his leadership but he's gotta re-do to stay. Less than $2mil hit to save $4.8mil in cap as stands now. I'll be disappointed if he carries $6.5mil of our cap in '13.

Returning to potential draft guys. How would Sean Porter fit in with Lofton and Hawthorne? Would that leave Hawthorne in the SLB slot? Blues, I know you've been pimping Sean Porter around here, so I figure you could peg him best.

I'd prolly be stoked over Porter as much as we wanted Lavonte David (at #59) before the 2nd was taken away. Preseason he was in conversation as a 1st rder as a 3-4 OLB but A&M switched to a 4-3 Walter 12/15/12: The senior has recorded 60 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, four passes broken up and an interception for Texas A&M this season.

What is it about Michael Johnson that impresses you? I just looked up his stats and it isn't that impressive. Prior 3 years were pretty bad. This year he has 8.5 sacks with 3 of them coming in one game. Very solid, but that wouldn't exactly make me feel secure.
He's a physical freak at 6'7" 270 lbs. I remember analysts talking about his athleticism when he was coming out in the draft. A plus is that he would probably be on the cheaper side. I just don't see myself getting excited about the saints signing him.

As far as Drafting and OLB, I've been very impressed with Cameron Lawrence (MSU). Didn't watch all of his games but from the few I did he seemed to be a menace the opponent just couldn't get away from. Whether he's in man to man or zone, he ALWAYS around the ball. He's not gonna be the strongest on the field but the motor and relentless this guy has is awesome. Wouldn't mind taking him in the 5th.
I pray we don't take Sheldon Richardson I the 1st, we can do so much better!! Plus I like our rotation now excluding Ellis.

Pass rushers is an obvious need, butI think protecting Brees is gonna be priority #1.. He has been getting absolutely hammered this year. Either get one of the A&M boys or Lewan. If not trade down to the late 20's and get Barret Jones in addition to a 2nd round pick.

I just like him as a guy that is young (25), highly gifted physically, and just coming on strong now. You could get an Osi or Freeney (Will Smith ages) as stopgap but they are looking at the downside of their career. Avril will get mega bucks. He's good but will cost a lot more than how I value his ability. Johnson won't be a bargain but still will carry some investment value banking on his career production curve to continue upward.
He reminds me much of Jimmy Graham. Very high ceiling but needed even more refinement time. He has been slowed by various dings and it seems the Bengals have had a hard time figuring how they want to use him.

I can see him falling into the 6th round, but 7th or UDFA... No way.
