I have a 10 year old wanting the game for Christmas. I know it's rated M, but is it just for the violence? Anything else that's not suited for younger kids?

I think it's rated M just for the killing but there is nothing rally gore about it unless you are against killing aliens

the most gruesome thing is the assasinations and they aren't too bad. halo doesn't have very much blood or gore. I think its pretty safe.

In all seriousness, Halo is generally the less violent game in the shooter genre. The most blood you'll see will be a quick splatter and it's gone before you know it. There might be a tiny bit of language in the campaign, but that would be it.
