I know this is going to be a stupid question, but what is a mix tape (seems rap related)?
To me it was something I always made for myself and friends of various artists and songs...

Not rap related as far as I know -- can be any style or a variety of styles. Your definition is what I think of as a mix tape.

A mixtape is a free 'album' put out by rap artists. Essentially, it does not have the high production costs (sometimes they use beats from other songs) and sometimes it is used to pump up publicity for upcoming albums.
However, with that said, some mixtapes are better than the albums that follow.
