| Tipping point Schooling: Let good grades leave early (Posted on 12/4/12 at 2:05 pm)
it may be hard with buses and all, but will applying the tipping point principle to school reward will make poorer students want to achieve? kids below a certain standard have to stay longer, which would actually be "normal" time, just that the kids who perform above standards would get to leave early. They can either walk home if they are allowed, picked up by parents, or can goto the auditorium where some cartoon is playing for the last hour of the day. Kids left behind will get pissed and strive to be better, and teachers can spend more time with the kids who "need" more attention. good?

I don't think you really understand what the tipping point is.

Good. We need to let dumb kids drop out so that we don't need to keep importing Mexicans to do shitty jobs. Let dumb Americans pick our produce, roof our houses, pick up our trash and dig our ditches. If the dumb would drop out then we won't have to be so mad at our teachers for not being able to teach them. Think of how our STEM scores would improve vs. Europe.

I still think the expectations for kids are too low due to the bad students being so far behind. I think we should push for them continuing to be better instead of telling them they are good enough encouraging then to now just go watch cartoons.

How about borrow from the direction of the national culture and apply grade socialism? Tax grade points from the "A" students and distribute to the poor students. This way everyone can get a C+ or thereabouts.

If school were like the tipping point, good students would bring the performance of bad students up. Hence, you would actually want the good students to stay. Conversely, removing the good students would cause the performance of bad ones to plummet, as the school would cross some threshold of anti-intelligence. As I said, I'm not sure Jahel knows what a tipping point is.

the correct solution is to get the kids that don't have parents supportive of learning in a class together. let the kids who have parents that care be together and the kids who don't have parents that care be together. sucks for the kids, but man, what a better system for the kids who have loving parents.

How many quality students do you think are really left in the crap schools? After decades of failure those places have pretty much segregated themselves by merit as well as race. Anyone here a potential scholar whose parents left them to languor in dysfunction? Crap schools pretty much have low standards because they have cognitively deficient students.

I still think the good public schools in LA suck and bring down the better students. So I think my point is still valid.

No. Why don't we stop putting kids in these prisons we call public schools? Let them leave whenever they want.

Teachers are only part of the education process. The children have to want to learn, and the parents have to make the children understand the importance of a good education. A teacher is only with the child about an hour a day (middle school/high school) or five hours a week. A teacher cannot control the learning environment at home nor can a teacher force a student to do their homework, study for tests, or get a good night’s sleep. That is all the responsibility of the parent. Yet, when students fail, it's all being poured on the teacher. The real answer is LET the students fail and hold them back. Make the student accountable for the grades they receive in school again.

How about creating a single magnet program for elementary, middle school, and high school where the magnet school is funded for great technology and teachers, but more importantly "cool" things. Double the budget for lunch and get better food. Triple the budget for athletics and have some really cool sports. Fund top notch field trips to cool places. Most importantly, let admission be merit based only and let people work their way up and fail their way out every year. Not only would it encourage students to work better for a cooler school experience, it would give an early lesson in working hard for a better "life".

Interesting the good schools suck, and yet they are good. You certainly are using persuasive logic. You go to a crap school?

How do you get into this magnet? Lottery, merit, connections, Why not return to neighborhood schools and let the schools actually reflect the values of the community and save on bussing, security, and get the parents involved.

My point is even the public schools that are considered "good" in the state of LA are still not very good academically IMO. I didn't feel the school I went to was that great yet it was considered one of the "good" schools.

I'm all for letting kids who excel zoom on through as fast as they can. The only catch is those who go through so fast that they are significantly younger than others in their grade, but frankly they should probably be in a separate program entirely (and no, I'm not talking about gifted and talented, but beyond that). Such programs do exist but they are boarding programs and aren't usually paid for. But this doesn't motivate the kids who are plodding, that is usually more the fault of uninvolved parents. Those kids are generally just screwed, unfortunately.
