| SI Conducts Mock NCAAF Playoff Committee (Posted on 11/29/12 at 1:25 pm)
I saw that this was posted in another thread, but thought it deserved it's own because of some of the results and dynamics discussed. Mock selection committee: How a four-team playoff would look now
quote:
For a glimpse into the vexing challenges the committee will face, SI enlisted 11 athletic directors representing each FBS conference and the independents. (The lineup originally included four conference commissioners or executives, much like the basketball committee, but following a Nov. 12 BCS meeting in which our project was discussed, all reluctantly pulled out.) Former NCAA executive Greg Shaheen, who for the past 12 years served as the lead facilitator for the men's basketball selection committee, spearheaded the exercise for SI.

So essentially winning your conference means absolutely nothing

This would suck for Georgia. But that's why you don't lose 35-7.

which imo is the reason we need an 8 team playoff. the 5 major conference winners get in, one non-aq school (if they are ranked at certain place, kind of like the bcs 16 thing) and 2 wild cards.

I think that model assumes ga loses on Saturday.

Agreed. 8 teams 5 conference winners 3 wild cards Conference winners have to be in the top 12 of the BCS No 2 team conference limit Not sure about non AQ-they'd be to at least be in the top 12 to even be considered, 16 is way too generous This year we'd have 1. ND 8. FSU (assuming they move up from 13 in BCS) 4. Oregon 5. K State 3. UF 6. Stanford 2. Bama 7. Nebraska (if they won, if Wisconsin won, no Big 10 rep) If FSU/Big 10 didn't meet the criteria then LSU and UGA would both sneak in. LSU would be in first b/c they played a more difficult schedule and would likely have a higher BCS ranking.

It really should be 8 teams in my opinion: Group A 1. Notre Dame vs. 8. Stanford 3. Georgia vs. 6. Kansas State Group B 2. Alabama vs. 7. LSU 4. Florida vs. 5. Oregon Don't like rematches? Deal with it.

I think you could avoid 1st round rematches rather easily. Then let the chips fall where they may.

Not nothing necessarily, but it's definitely been de-emphasized because of conference expansion. Two teams in a single conference can play such drastically different schedules that you have to go on entire body of work.

I think UF vs Oregon would be a hell of a game. There would be a shite load of speed on that field.

Until someone cries foul because they get LSU instead of Kent State. (or something like that...)

For last year I would have had 1. LSU 8. VT 4. Oregon 5. Arkie 3. Okie St 6. Boise 2. Bama 7. Wisconsin

precisely. It means exactly dick. It'd be better to lose to your division rival and sit out while they go play and beat themselves up in the Conference championship game.

If this is the way the selection process is going to go (per the article), there is going to be more controversy with the new 4 team format than the current model. I don't know why in the hell they won't go to at least a 6 or 8 team playoff model. If it's a 6 team model, give the top two seeds as an incentive for having great seasons. Then allow the remaining play divisional type round games. If it's an 8 team, just pit the seeds against each other accordingly. It's not that damn complicated to come up with a format that works, but this 4-team bull shite is going to be a disaster

Bama didn't play the top 4 SEC East schools, GA didn't play the top 4 SEC West schools....
