For those of you who watch Downton Abbey, has anyone else noticed that Cora's American accent is god awful? It almost makes her scenes unwatchable.

It is funny-sounding. I have more trouble with her being stupid and taking O'Brien's gossip as gospel.

Yes, her accent is completely awful. She's supposed to be from NY right? She sounds pretty bad. It's the way she emphasizes the last syllable.

Ah, I IMDBed the wrong actress.

But my point still stands. Her accent doesn't sound natural at all.

I had never seen any of these English PBS soaps until a couple of months ago when I stumbled on the new Upstairs Downstairs. I watched both seasons of that, then Downton Abbey (has the Christmas show been shown in England yet?), now I'm watching the original Upstairs Downstairs from the '70s, which I had never seen before. Now on the 4th season... UD ('70) covers the same time frame as DA, which quite blatantly rips it off in a number of ways. Those desperate for an English soap opera may want to check it out (it's on YouTube), although be warned: it's done on a much lower budget, and moves considerably slower than DA.

I should have said "SPOILERS"

I have not seen any of this show since Lord Grantham kissed that maid. I turned it off immediately and haven't been back since. I had no desire to see him cheat and it ruined his character and the entire show for me.

ETA: edited to add "SPOILERS"

I think she does a great job at the accent of an aristocratic American who has probably lived in England more than the US

It's pretty clearly taken from the original UD. They're set during the same period and share some plotlines. The only real difference is DA is bigger -- bigger house, bigger staff of servants, bigger noble title.
