| Viagra vs Birth Control (Posted on 11/20/12 at 5:46 pm)
I'd like someone to tell me why birth control shouldn't be covered by insurance but Viagra should. I think this is a microcosm issue that represents a great problem in a certain political faction of our country. It shows these people that believe this are extremely self absorbed with no foresight. 1. If you complain about lazy degenerates getting welfare, then you should want insurance to pay for birth control. If you have any foresight you'll see that if you pay for birth control it lowers the amount of babies coming into this world to people that can't afford to take care of them. 2. You have to be a bat shite crazy self absorbed arse hole to think it's wrong for birth control to be covered, but it's okay to get your blue pills. What is the difference? If anything the birth control has better social consequences than an old man getting his rocks off. Think about it.

I don't think you understand the issue...

Say what you will about the Patient Protection and Affordability Act—a.k.a Obamacare—but one thing’s for certain: It’s about to save a lot of women a heck of a lot of money. On August 1st, the bill’s (controversial) contraceptive-coverage measure goes into effect, under which insurance companies must provide members with options for free—that’s right, zero cost—contraceptives. This includes oral birth-control pills, emergency contraceptives (i.e. the morning-after pill), and diaphragms, as well as services like sterilization, patient counseling and education about contraception options.

How is it "free" if you're paying for the insurance?

Are you under the impression those drugs fall into the same category? What you meant to ask is why some insurance companies pay for : or but not Right?

true...technically nothing is "free", regardless of Rex's definition. I'm assuming, however, that insurance companies are not allowed to vary premiums based on whether, or not, the chick uses these services...so all policy holders basically subsidize their distribution.

Viagra is used to treat a medical condition. BCP are used to treat a lifestyle choice and In some instances BCP can be used to regulate menstral cycles and cramping, which in that case I believe it is covered.

Birth control is a very good investment for an insurance company. Which is why most sensible insurance companies already cover it.

It's also used to treat ovarian cysts and endometriosis. However, if my insurance didn't cover it, I would just pay it out of pocket.

If I remember correctly when BC is prescribed for medical reasons, cysts, etc., then insurance usually covers it. Heck I even think the Catholic Church had no problem covering it for medicinal reasons. Just not contraceptive.

Viagra shouldn't be covered. It is fairly a rec drug. In my plan BC is covered and viagra not so much and frankly that is the way it should be.

Birth control is evil, Viagra is not. Not to say that Viagra should be covered, just why I have a massive problem with one and not the other. /thread

You might want to check your facts. There are a lot of insurance companies that offer no coverage at all for Viagra, yet there is no HHS mandate to force them to change. You have to be crazy and self absorbed to think you're entitled to other people to pay for your birth control, but it's OK to force patients needing Viagra to pay their own way.

So you think that birth control pills are bad but nature's birth control should treated? ETA: I don't think there should be a mandate for birth control or any drug for that matter. If it's something the company wants to negotiate into their coverage then fine. If they don't, then that's fine, too.
