No, any pit you dig will just collect water and ash. This really isn't hard people, just use your imagination. Literally anything stone/brick in a circle will keep fire from spreading.

You can make it as complicated as you want. What you have planned will work. Just be careful about the rocks in he bottom, hot rocks are not fun to dodge if they start exploding.

Latest fire project at the house, had to do some dressing up still.

Yeah, I think the ones in this thread asking questions are wanting it to look really flashy and shit, but think there's some magic trick to making it functional.

Guys, it's literally what he posted. The aesthetics are all on you unless you want to pay someone to do something this simple.

Result of a few beers and more investment than I should have.

Really want to add a pot that overflows with the fire coming out of the top. Figure it will take another 6 pack of engineering to get that done.

Just stack bricks in a circle. You'll need a few. No mortar required. And the size matters on how big you plan on making the fire.

I'd leave a few openings in the bottom for air flow.

Thanks, still got some kinks to work out. The trick is to get really small gas bubbles. Used some diffusion stones and spread out gas outlets. Not going to lie, lost some arm hair and pine straw in the trial and error part.

In the process of rebuilding the whole structure out of stainless steel.

Sand is a great alternative to gravel, fwiw. chimineas require a layer of sand in them

Depends on the look you're going for. I like the ones that are covered. I think a stack of bricks looks kinda shitty, but there are way to do them nicely.

I'd recco to use fire bricks on the inside so your decorative bricks don't crack. Excessive heat can split stone and bricks not cured to withstand high temps.

I prefer them because adding a spit and doing a pig roast, or putting a grill rack on top of the pit is easy to do and gives you another cool option when entertaining.

Think I might go with something like this:

Building a Firepit

I like the hole with gravel for drainage. Also like the idea of lava rock. Looks nice and relatively simple.

That's a good idea too. I'm not worried about mess though, but I think I can incorporate some ideas into my plan.

I dug a hole about 4 inches into the ground. Went to a junk yard and got a freight truck rim similar to this and put it in the hole
