Starter Phish Album?

Watched an old SNL and really experienced Phish for the first time.

And after some research my main choices seem to be between Junta, Rift, and Hoist...

I think their latest one, Party Time, is probably their best from a songwriting and production point of view. However, if you saw them live and they played more than 3 or 4 songs off that album you'd probably be disappointed.

Phish is meant to be experienced live and in concert. They have a unique synergy with their crowd. It makes for an interesting experience.

Their officially released live music catalog is staggering. My favorite years are 1992-95 and 1997.

I'm one of the rare Phish fans that prefer their studio work over listening to some bootleg show. Been listening to them for about 20+ years and have always felt this way. They have some good concert footage on youtube but it's just what I prefer. Call me crazy.

My personal favorite is Billy Breathes but maybe not the best intro album.

Maybe their first one Junta is the best one b/c that one really let's you know what you're going to get from them for at least the next 3 albums.

Was that the one where they performed 46 Days?

Have you seen them live? If you're going off youtube vids and having never seen them, then yes, i'll call you crazy.

I feel the same way. The only live enjoy are when I am there. I don't like listening to live shows on cd. It just doesn't do it for me.

I wouldn't really call myself a Phish fan, but I did like their albums Billy Breathes, and Story of the Ghost.

with Phish screw albums, go with live shows. I started with Live Phish Vol. 16, the 1998 Halloween show. This Blog will be your phriend.

Indeed it was. They kept making Chuck Norris jokes.

Billy Breathes is by far their best studio record.
Start with that one, and then move to Junta, Rift, or Lawn Boy.

Yeah I've seen them live and it was awesome. But it's one thing to be there and experience it than just listening to a bootleg. I know, I' m weird like that with phish bc I actually like live Dead or Black Crowes sets.

re: Starter Phish Album?

I'm the same way. I've been listening to Phish since ~1992. Jon Fishman is easily one of my favorite drummers ever, love his style.

I like the studio albums better than hearing the jam version. That's the disconnect for me. And I'm a musician. It's not that I don't have any taste or don't know music, etc.

I just get too ADD and lose interest after too long into a song. But as far as the songs themselves, the melody, the riff, the song structure, the lyrics, etc - I love Phish.

For the OP, Hoist ftw.
