Unemployment benefits should not extend to union workers

We should not subsidies strikes with state or federal unemployment insurance. Union members on strike should not be allowed to draw unemployment.

I thought you could only get unemployment if you were fired.

You cannot get it if you are fired for cause. Layoffs and strikes do qualify people for unemployment in most states.

So electing not to work qualifies you for unemployment. I believe the technical term for this is derp.

Not all states play unemployment to strikers but many do.

What if an individual in the Union doesnt agree with the Union's decision to strike and is out of work reluctantly? This happens all too often. In many collective bargaining organizations a majority vote isnt necessary to move toward a strike.

You don't need to be in a union to do this.

You too can participate in this rule.

Start a small company and be its employee.
Pay the proper payroll taxes (especially unemployment taxes)
Lay yourself off.
Collect unemployment.

Don't get mad, get even.

Well then they shouldn't have joined the union! When you willingly join the union that means you get the good and the bad that comes with it.

Reminds me of that old saying...Having your cake and eating it too!

Too bad they elected to take a job that financially supports the union.

I bet most states will allow the Hostess workers to have unemployment since they are closing. That is not right either. Hostess was perfectly willing to remain open if the worker would have worked.

Can I actually do this? Is this a real thing? Is it unethical for me to exploit such a loophole in order to hasten the decline of policies I don't approve of?

Time to do some reading.

Thats more easily said than done. There are many industries and areas where you are unemployable without Union membership. You can choose to not join the Union, but remember that the organization is contractually bound to the Union. If the Union strikes, you are out of a job whether you are Union or not.

I dont disagree with you, but having dealt with Nursing Union's and seen this very situation before its far more messy than the OP may understand.

Screwed. If you are not a member of the union but the union forces the business to shut down you should be entitled to unemployment.

Right. I put more blame on the greedy union bosses, less on the rank and file workers. But, I can't quite let them completely off, don't they vote for the strike on the recommendation of the bosses?

No, you can't do this. At least not in california where my friends business went under. He couldn't collect UE.

I agree with the OP on strikes. Union should cover that. But if they get laid off, they should be able to collect as you or I ccould collect.
