From having to wait until the ball reached it's apex before you could tap it to a teammate to whomever can get their hand on it after it leaves the referees hand can throw it to a teammate?

Don't bother telling me it's not like that because I see it all the time.

It's time to move on from the opening tip and just flip a coin.

While it is a pointless exertion of energy, basketball wouldn't be the same without an opening tip.

It would be a buzzkill to just start a game throwing the ball in from the backcourt.

The anticipation of the opening tip is one of the weirdest experiences in the sports I've played. Football seemed to have a buildup, up to lining up and kicking it off. It was a great buildup to the first contact.

Basketball, you kind of awkwardly stepped out there, maybe debated which guy would guard who. Awkwardly figure out a good position and you can stand basically anywhere. OH shite THEY'RE TIPPING THE BALL frick OR shite SCORE!

Um, there are certainly places you want to be on the tip, and varied strategied. You can tip up for lay up. Back for a half court set up, play D. All sorts of shite.
