Building a htpc for my brother's wedding present.
Fractal design core 1000 case
cooler master 92mm fan for exhaust
ASRock FM2A75-DGS micro atx motherboard
AMD A10-5800k cpu
OCZ agility 4 64gb sata 3 ssd
asus DVD/bluray drive
corsair vengeance 2x4gb 1866 RAM
Rosewill fortress 450w 80 plus platinum PSU
Rosewill PCI-e wireless card

488 dollars. I know it's overkill on the cpu, psu, and ram. The price difference between that apu and the next lowest one is like 20 dollars for an extra .6GHz and better on chip graphics. I wanted to have enough power to add a discreet GPU if he needed it later. I chose 1866 ram because reviews I read on the APU said that it benefitted from the fastest ram supported. Price difference between 4gigs and 8 gigs of 1866 was like 15 dollars.

Every part I picked was the least expensive or was on deep discount. He will add any HDDs, tv tuner, remote, etc. Anyone want to talk me down from spending this much on a HTPC that has room to be a gaming PC if he so desires? please?
ETA actually changed to the pro m4 asrock mobo because it has rear hdmi out.

I'm pretty sure the speeds for the ram don't necessarily matter as much than the actualy ram you have. I've heard there isn't "that" much difference between 1600 and 1866

yeah i was just going off a toms hardware article that noted that they saw better performance with maximum rated speeds regarding APUs. LINK
otherwise everything look good blue?

I am curious as to how good the GFX are on the CPU and the Mobo combo.

I was looking at the next step up Mobo and the same CPU and reading it says with the right memory it is enough to run BF3 on high, not ultra, at a steady 60FPS. People have ran the same set up with a 7750 and have reported a steady 120FPS.

Mobo

I love the new Fractal Design Node 304. Perfect for a HTPC.

You aren't paying for the better APU really in that chip but higher clock speeds. If you are trying to cut cost I would get the cheaper one then modest OC for him.

Also, I know those things get huge benefits with an added GPU in Cfx.

Correct, because the APU uses the system RAM for VRAM. The controller is on the chip but uses the physically RAM in the rig for VRAM.

ETA:

Also, I just ordered my first APU from AMD. I have never messed around with one before. Building a simple video and internet machine for the grand parents. Also will be my first iTX board.

The board came in yesterday and really don't know why I have been buying full ATX boards, you can put that damn iTX board anywhere!

Maybe, with 0 mods and No AA.

Still that seems hard to believe if you are playing in multi-player and not campaign.
