Im the only one who hunts 45 acres of private land, that hasnt been hunted in years, which is part of about 2 square miles of woods that is all private land to the locals. Last year was my first year hunting the property so i let two young 4 points walk. This year i am consistantly seeing two 6 points and a 4 point and lots of does but nothing bigger (although last year i did see an 8 and a big 6 point) I dont think the rest of the woods are hunted too hard but im guessing at least one other person hunts it from time to time. Would you shoot or not? I dont think its an area to have lots of huge deer but I want to let the deer grow but no telling if someone else will get them

Dude, these aren't debatable if you want sincere answers.

Same response as other thread, let him walk. If you want meat just shoot a doe.

Good looking young buck.
That's the very last thing you want to shoot.

If you want better deer in the future, let it walk.
If you want meat and ain't seeing does, shoot.

Dont you think its kind of pointless to manage deer fot 8 points+ if they are going to roam to the next property and get shot? i only saw the 8 point and big 6 point once last year and never again. Im new to the deer hunting scene so im looking for advice so i dont grow big deer for the neighbors.

If you shoot him now you will never know.

I wouldnt, but to each his own. If you are trying to grow a good herd no.. If you just wana kill some deer choot it

i agree and i dont mind letting deer walk like i did last year (only shot a doe last year) I've never killed a buck so watching them grow is going to pay off. im making sure it pays of for me and not some random guy. I think once they hit 8 points its time to put them down

A fat doe would have more meat on it than that little buck. No harm shooting it if you want to kill a buck. But I would just as soon shoot a doe than a little buck.
Can't really manage on 45 acres. Maybe talk to you neighbors if you can. See what they shoot and let walk.

I'll give the same advice I was gonna give on the other thread.
Whether or not to shoot boils down to many factors...
1) How many deer do you see while hunting? If you rarely see anything and don't know if you'll have a good chance to kill a doe or a large buck on another hunt, then by all means kill any legal deer you see.
2) How often do you get to hunt? My camp is 3.5 hours away and I have a busy family life. So I only get to go every other weekend at the most. Especially with holidays and everything. If you're in the same boat, then shoot what you can.
3) What is your objective for hunting? I like to eat deer meat. Some people only consider a deer a trophy if he has a large growth of bone attached to his head. I, on the other hand, consider any grown deer a trophy.
So, my advice is, shoot what you want and don't let these QDMA, $5000/year club members influence what you shoot on 45 acres.

I used to think the same thing hunting 10 acres in upstate SC. Why let a young 6 walk if he MIGHT get shot over on the next lease by meat hunters?
Well I let them walk anyway. Last two years I have arrowed two wallhangers from that 10 acres that I am POSITIVE were 6 pts from a couple yrs back.
Choice is yours....

- I can shoot a doe, no problem. Large buck - doubtful since this 6 is the biggest i have seen

- i can hunt every weekend. Its my girlfriends land and we are the only hunters.

- I like to eat game and thats what the doe meat is for. I would also like to have a nice buck or 2 a season. i dont need a 10 point every other weekend but a big 6 or 8 per yr would be rewarding from transforming the property from nothing

What would you do with the antlers? Would you mount him? No. Would you show him off to your buddies? Would you here and start a thread, bragging about this buck?
You say you want to shoot a big 6 or 8, but that's a tiny 6 and a young deer. Let him walk and shoot a doe.

With all the evidence presented, I'd probably let him walk. Sounds like you have plenty of chances to hunt and have does for meat. So I don't see why not let him walk and see what he becomes.

cant argue with ya on that. Ill probably let him and the others walk this year and take another doe. i may let the ole lady shoot a buck if we continue seeing lots of young bucks since it is her property, although she is on board with managing the deer
