Looking to build a gaming pc for my son and we have a $1,000 budget. Any suggestions?

start at pcpartpicker.com thats where i started my build. Place is great for making sure parts are compatible.
ETA: i5 3750k, and a higher end GPU, basics after that should be able to come in under $1000. Dont forget $100 for OS. Get it quick, win 8 is coming out next week.

You won't need a 3570. A FX4100 will do you just fine. OC to 4.1 and you are good. (A $20 after market cooler could handle this.
ETA: Let me get settled in and I can put you something together.
CPU: $109 - AMD FX-4100
MOBO: $54 - MSI 760G
RAM: $50 - Pick DDR3 2x4GB set you like
GPU: $179 - MSI Radeon HD 7850
PSU: $69 - Ultra X4 Modular 650W (I wouldn't normally recommened anything but SeaSonic, Silverstone or Corsair.. this is a good deal)
Case: $70 - Allocated for you to pick out
OS: $90 - Windows 7 (DO NOT BUY WINDOWS)
Cooler: $29 - Cooler Master RR-VTPS-28PK-R1
Total: $650
I do recommend upgrading to a 660Ti or 7950. Put your money into your GPU.

I thought windows 8 was absolute garbage. Good thing I get 7 free through LSU. You can always torrent a copy if you'd want the extra $100 to put into the computer

Benchmarks: LINK /
CPU: Intel Core i5-3470 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($196.97 @ CompUSA)
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Pro4 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($109.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: Kingston Blu 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($35.84 @ Amazon)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($80.53 @ Amazon)
Storage: OCZ Vertex 4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 3GB Video Card ($387.86 @ Newegg)
Case: Cooler Master Elite 430 ATX Mid Tower Case ($39.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: Corsair Builder 600W 80 PLUS Certified ATX12V Power Supply ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $1001.16
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
Im assuming you won't be overclocking, but if you are drop to a 2500k, or an amd CPU. The video card is the most important component in a gaming build (unless for games like GW2, WoW, which the CPU is heavily used)

Not all games are gpu intensive. Infact, many games are CPU intensive. AMD is years behind Intel on processors. Just a heads up. Their GPUs are on par with NVIDIA so it is whatever deal is best at the time.
Check out this website if you have any questions on best parts for the money. They benchmark every part.

The 2500k is much better than the 3470 and it is not even close.

By your past 2 posts, I don't know if you're trolling or actually being serious.

2500k Benchmarks
3470 Benchmarks
And even tomshardware agrees that you're completely wrong when clearly the 3470 is better (and cheaper).

Most of this statement (besides the video card part, which is correct) is idiotic. About 90% of todays games are GPU intensive than CPU (Both matter, of course). On $800-900 builds, I would go about and say grab an i3 or AMD processor and get a very good GPU (as would a majority of others).
AMD processors aren't "years" behind Intel. They are two complete different types of processors. AMDs are geared more towards APUs (but still very effective CPUs), and Intels are steered more towards true CPUs. For gaming, neither one really makes a huge difference. When we get to talking about 3D rendering, graphic design, etc..., that's a completely different story.

Jesus man yes, but he is building a budget build for his kid.. not a folder.
A 4100 with a modest OC @ 4.1 will run the crap out of TF2.

Are you a folder? I've always wanted to try that or bitcoin mining, but that shite looks confusing

I used to, a long time ago. Like Circa 06-07, waste of power (I know wrong right).

I want to start mining bitcoins (supposedly make some good money off of it if your hardware is good enough), but it just looks crazy confusing

Thanks for your inputs!! He will be a happy kid!!

Barracuda
The 2500k has an unlocked modifier and had almost identical benchmark scores. The 2500k ocs to 4.0ghz with a $20 heat sink giving it a huge advantage over that i3 you like. Ivy ocs like shite.
The guy has a $1000 budget not a $650 bottom of the barrel budget.
By the way tomshardware does not take into account overclocking which is easy like Sunday morning these days.
Also AMD is only marketing their processord towards graphics because they are getting destroyed by intel so badly. If the guy buys a video card the processor graphics are 100% pointless.
Here is a link showing AMD about 4 years behind intel.

Both my Ivys OC'ed just fine. Fully Prime95 stable.
What you are talking about are the benchmarkers going +5Ghz, which isn't applicable in this case.

my 3570k OCed to 4.7 with an nhd14 just using mobo utilities.

If you are familiar with TH, then mosey on to their Gaming CPU Hierarchy Chart, found here.
While Intel dominates the top end of the chart, AMD has plenty of options starting in tier 3.
