Here's my email to the feller at Buffalo Trace. The company that now makes Old Charter.

Mr. Brown,

I am a huge fan of Old Charter 8. Just curious why the handle was removed from the ½ gallon and if it would be possible to re-attach it?

Below are a few safety issues that the handle-less bottle creates that I would like to point out:
- Potential wrist injury- Human beings have to contort their wrist at an unnatural angle to pour liquid from a vessel. A vessel the size and weight of the half gallon could potentially cause serious ligament damage and possible tendon rupture.
- Lower extremity damage- For decades the Charter 8 consumers have been accustomed to grasping a handle to secure the bottle. It could take years for us to adjust to the no-handle bottle, and in that time there is no telling how many bottles will slip through our hands and strike our knees, ankles, feet and toes.
- Spillage and vehicle damage- When one purchases a half gallon of Old Charter 8, the most logical place to store it for your ride home is on the back seat of your vehicle. The unique handle that is/was on the bottle of Charter 8 would not allow the bottle to roll off of the seat and crash to the floor. Obviously a perfectly round bottle will roll off of a vehicle seat and could cause a tremendous financial burden to the customer as he/she will have to have their vehicle cleaned.
- Collapse of the homemade pepper sauce industry- I’m not sure if you are aware of the millions of Charter 8 customers who store their homemade pepper sauces in empty Charter 8 bottles. These bottles will become impractical because of all the reasons mentioned above.

I have personally witnessed a max exodus from life-long Charter 8 drinkers to other brands of whiskeys. I for one have been resisting the change, but I’m not sure how much longer I can hold out.

If you are not the individual who is control of this matter, please forward to the correct person. Thanks for your time.

Sincerely

A Faithful Costumer

I'm a big fan of both Buffalo Trace and Old Charter. I've got an old half gallon with the handle of Charter that I keep around to empty the new worthless vessels into.

Here's his reply:

Hello and thank you for your note.

Thank you also for being a fan of Charter 8, much appreciated!

The handle was removed from Charter 8 as part of a brand overhaul. The previous bottle was decidedly old, tired, cheap looking and not in keeping with the 8 year old whiskey inside the bottle. In creating the new bottle we wanted to replicate the design of the liter and 750ml bottle which has much more character.

We looked at the handle question closely and decided to go without a handle, in line with other competitive brands i.e. Jack Daniels, Evan Williams, Makers Mark. Simultaneously, we also introduced a lightweight PET 1.75L bottle, which is becoming increasingly popular on more expensive brands in the event that anyone had an issue with the new bottle. At this time we have no plans to add a handle back to the glass 1.75L, sorry.

I very much appreciate your taking the time to write and hope you will continue to be a fan of Charter long into the future.

Cheers for now,

Mark.

What a load of shite. Obviously they changed bottles to cut cost. Cost that were not relayed to the consumer. If Mark thinks he can get over on me with bullshite reteric like this "The previous bottle was decidedly old, tired, cheap looking and not in keeping with the 8 year old whiskey inside the bottle." well then he's got another think coming

I've done that too Politiceaux. But we ought not have to, damnit.

cheap looking

He's got a point on this one. If they're trying to market as a premium brand, which they are trying to do, then they don't put off that image with the old bottles.

Don't drink the kool aid ProjectP2294. The old bottles were big and thick and handled and badass. These new ones are nothing but a cost cutting measure. Probably to pay for this Mr. Brown's mistress' new Lexus or some shite.

I hardly think that giving him a pass on one of his 7 points is 'drinking the kool aid'.

ETA: Besides, I'm an unbiased observer in this fight. While I would never turn down an offering of Old Charter, my first preference lies with Maker's Mark.

The validity of any of his points is of no consequence. He is the enemy.

While I agree with the nobility of the cause, I question the logic of making the man in charge of the supply you love so dearly the enemy.

And that is #1 flaw in Mr. Brown's theory. His pompous arse thought he could snatch the handles off our bottles without consequence. He thought us sheeple, nay, us lemmings, would blindly follow him and his new cheap arse handle-less bottles. Well not this lemming. I've already converted my whiskey consumption from 100% Old Charter to 70% Old Charter. The fine laddies at Dewar's are getting the other 30%. The handle that is firmly planted on the side of their 1/2 gallons tells me that they value their customers. I hope to be 50/50 Charter Dewars within the next 12 months.

Good luck with that. I know it is a daunting challenge.

Oh it will be. But it's a challenge that I welcome. In the words of mediocre 90's country singer Aaron Tippin, "you've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything".

Well sir, fight on. And if I see another bourbon whiskey that bears a handle and is fit for consumption, you'll be the first to know. I don't see the need to make any rash decisions and start sending your money over the United Kingdom just for the sake of a glass handle.

Eagle Rare, also made at Buffalo Trace, doesn't have a handle on its 1.75 liter bottle either.

Pretty fancy pants prosin' balls. Write Mr. Mark back and use the term "ergonomic" several times. Using that word might give you a decided advantage by showing him that he ain't dealin' with an udeducated and "old words" sort of feller.
Good luck in this endeavor, but in case it doesn't work, the switch to Evan Williams was semi-painless for me.
