October 15, 1988

In his only plate appearance in the Fall Classic, a limping Kirk Gibson, appearing as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning of Game 1, sends two-out, 3-2 back-door slider from the A's relief ace Dennis Eckersley over the right field fence. It's the first time a World Series game is ever decided on a come-from-behind home run in the final inning.

Dennis Eckersley should've been in Tombstone.

Could be argued as the most memorable play in baseball history.

I have no vested interest in either team, and I think this is one of the greatest sporting moments I have ever witnesses in my life. What a great moment.

Gibson's character would've shot him down.

I was sitting in my 1988 Ford Tempo on Carrollton at the Rally's eating a burger and fries listening to the end of that game.....never forget where I was at that moment for the rest of my life

and not a A's or Dodgers fan at all

One of the best parts of the whole scene. You know that guy had to be thinking, "son of a bitch!!" That or, "shite, I dropped a Sweettart"

I will give it top 10 but not most memorable. Carlton Fisk's home run in 1975 was more memorable. Won game 6 in 12th inning to send the series to a 7th game. Some say that was the greatest World Series.

NBC was showing The Natural on rotation before the World Series so they had tape of Redford's famous last at bat with the lights going out.

After Gibson's home run, someone taped "Roy Hobbs" to Gibson's locker and the next day before the start of game 2 - NBC aired a spliced video of The Natural and Gibson's at bat together as one scene with the celebration and music and rounding the bases. It was great...haven't ever been able to find it again.

"I had an unfortunate feeling taking place as the inning was progressing," said Van Slyke. "I just could sense that things weren't going to be going our way and that this inning was going to be tough to get out of."

Still, as Francisco Cabrera stepped to the plate, Van Slyke knew Pittsburgh was just one pitch away from getting out of the inning. One more out and the Pirates would go to the World Series. So Van Slyke wanted to make sure. He told Barry Bonds, the Pirates' left fielder, to move in.

"I got his attention," Van Slyke said. "But he flipped me the bird. He put his hand up and said, 'I'll play where I want to play.'"

My ability to follow a 162 game season has waned a bit over the years. But I still love postseason baseball.

I won't put it up against the greatest of all time, but game 6 of last years series is certainly tops in recent memory.

Clown.

Although, I'm pretty sure Van Slyke didn't give Bonds a "I told you so" after the game
