Heres some advice. Went to Don's Seafood Hut in Laffy a couple of weeks ago. A bowl of seafood gumbo was $14.95. The cup as an app was $8.95. Either is highway robbery.
So, my advice is not to eat gumbo at Don's Seafood Hut.

My wife and her family don't care for okra in chunks either
What is the deal with not liking okra cut up? Yall throw hole okra in the gumbo?

Its a Gumbo damn it..
Make it the way you want, as long as you like it..
The world would be a boring place if everybodys Gumbo tasted the same.

I start browning my sausage in skillet then throw the okra in with it. i've also added a can of Rotel and smothered it down and thrown it in the gumbo
It's smothered..not sliced up and chunky. It has flavor and makes the gumbo really thick. I do not like the sliced okra in a gumbo.
ETA: here is a pot of smothered okra. Add a quart of that to a gumbo.

Why?
I was at camp and started to make smothered okra and tomatoes with shrimp and sausage and someone changed menu to gumbo. So I started roux in another pot and dumped in the okra/rotel/sausage mixture. I was pretty darn good.

Oh, ok. I didn't understand what people were talking about.

Read my thread on oven roux and try that next time. I think you'll like your gumbo even more.
