Have a chance to get either a SA .40 or .45, the XD-40 being one of them. Price is the same. Fits my hands well. What do you recommend?

What kind of price you looking at? Just curious.

XD45 and it isn't even close.

.45 will be easier to shoot due to it being a lower pressure round. The .40 S&W isn't a bad round, but I tend to agree that .45 ACP is a bit better.

I have a subcompact xd .40 and love it. I think all the guns they make are pretty solid.

He said the 45 was the service model. I assume XD.

I have the 9mm, I love it target ammo is cheap and I carry critical duty for defense purposes

Felt recoil is mostly a function of muzzle energy compared to the weight of the weapon. size and shape of the grip/buttstock is a factor as well as how hard the bolt carrier slams it's backstop.
Chamber pressure is a huge factor in muzzle blast, but not felt recoil.

Sheriff told me this morning the 40 had much cheaper am munition and it was used by most law enforcement

That's what I shoot. Had a guy that shoots comptetitively tell me it was the sweetest shooting .45 he's ever shot.

He hasn't shot very many .45's then

I'd choose the 45 ACP over the 40 S&W.

True, there are a number of different factors that effect the recoil of a gun. All things being equal (including weight of the gun and relationship of the gun's bore axis to the shooter's grip), different calibers seem to recoil differently. Last, there are multiple components to "recoil," including muzzle rise/flip and backward movement of the gun in the shooter's hand.
Having said that, most folks describe the "recoil" of the 40 S&W and 45 ACP as being different. Compared to the 45 ACP, the 40 S&W has more muzzle rise and returns to baseline more slowly. OTOH, the 45 ACP's recoil has more rearward push to it than does the 40 S&W. My experience has been the same. I've always read that the snappier recoil of the 40 S&W is b/c it's rounds are loaded to higher pressure than the 45 ACP, but I can't prove this is the cause.
Here's a video that demonstrates this well.
