Not sure what the criteria is these days, but I had this conversation other day

MMJ: festival circuit staple, 15 min songs, drug loving fans, in the Jam_On rotation..

Whattya got.

Last time the "jam band" topic came up the thread turned into a name calling pissing match. This should be fun.

They could fall under the "jam" umbrella, but they are honestly a psychedelic rock band.

First of all, frick jamon. They have such potential and yet fail so hard. I especially can't stand Warren Haynes' disgusting pig of a wife.

My Morning Jacket is an interesting band and somewhat difficult to pigeonhole. Unlike virtually all jam bands they are accepted by indie fans and even have a critically acclaimed album in indie circles (Z).

Although their live shows contain little to no improv, I'd still label them a jamband. They certainly cater to a jamband crowd. The multiple guitars do in fact jam from time to time. They have a lot of guests and frequently collaborate with other artists. Also, I really dig their choice in covers.

Eh....

Moe is a fun show with some heady jams. But MMJ rocks my face off so I'll go with them.

Jam_on has been letting almost anything on recently, so take from that what you will, but it seems like any group of slapdicks that play over 7 minutes get played.

Now, MMJ is good, but they just don't have that jammy feel that bands like Moe, Umphrey's, Widespread, Phish, etc. have

But the definition of jam can be dissected over 10,000x.

well they're not awful, so there's a good chance they're not a jam band. if they were one of the few good ones, I think people would know by now.

Well since according to this board any group that improvises at some point in time in a live set is considered a jam band, yea, I guess they are.

it really is something with these people

My band has a couple of spots in our set where it gets weird/solo but we aren't a jam band

You have to understand these are the people that think Scotland's mogwai is a jam band because they have 15 minute songs.

In that case, nofx is a jam band, and Godspeed you black emperor is too

Any band with a solo or an improv part in a song is a "jam band"?

That is beyond retarded and its easy to see that all of you are clearly retarded when describing genre, or you are just trolling

my vote is no. they are not a jamband.

However, they made their name as being the home band at the first few Bonnaroos. Back then that festie was very jamband oriented. I know their late night set at Bonnaroo #2 is considered the show that pretty much put them on the map.
