Why do you keep throwing out things like "they are prog rock they can't be a jam band."?

Jam Band isn't a genre its a scene and withing that scene are bands with many different genres.

The southern rock of WSP and Allman Brothers.
The prog rock of Primus and Umphreys Mcgee.
The folk of the dead. etc etc.

You're starting to blow my goddamn mind with this ignorance. I like you but these 3 comments that you have defended until you were blue in the face are beyond defense.

I hate labeling shite but this is pretty much it. It doesn't matter who/what/where/why WHATEVER...so long as they 'jam'.

Now WTF defines a jam band is beyond me. I've played a couple times before and we would extend songs or mesh a couple tunes or just (by my definition) 'jam' for a few minutes. It wouldn't be the whole show but we would open up with a little 5-10 minute intro jam. If we were a few songs in and felt a little too tight, we would just jam to loosen up and get right. It wasn't an every night thing so I wouldn't consider us a jam band.

Singers obviously can be musicians

In terms of sales and popularity it certainly was

Primus is one of my favorite bands of the last twenty years. Live, they will extend songs such as tommy the cat a couple of minutes or blue collared tweakers, but just because a band extends a few songs live does not mean they are a "jam band". That just means they are a good live band.

Hell, I've seen incubus extend a song or two, does that make them a jam band? of course not

My morning jacket still isn't a jam band, and neither is Primus with their 3 minute songs

Like I said Jam Band isn't a genre it is a scene and Primus most certainly lives among that scene.

If you can't understand that then you are blinded by your unprovoked hostility towards anything jam band related.

You don't like the scene and thats fine but you can't cherry pick the bands out of that scene that you like and say they aren't apart of it.

I havent listened to Primus in years... Although Ive known of them for over 20+ years, seen them a couple of times back then... In all that time, this is the only time Ive seem them called a Jam Band...

In the late 80s/early 90s, they were associated with the Alt. movement... The only think I can think would have changed is Claypool's association with the Phish guy in that other band...

Ditto. He was involved with oysterhead and frog brigade, and those two projects could probably be considered "jam bands" but not Primus. Primus has actual song structure and not meandering, wanking, noodling solos all over the place.

You're thinking of les claypool and Treys project oysterhead.

Primus isn't a jam band, nor are they considered a part of that "scene"

the ignorance is strong in this one!

its like if you admit that primus is part of the scene you can no longer like them.

I don't think of Primus as a jamband. They are a band that jams.

Les Claypool outside of Primus is a jamband though.
