Chest freezer for deer meat

What do the OB pros recommend when buying a new freezer to store deer meat in? How big does it need to be to hold each processed deer? Chest freezer or stand up? Any make and model recommendations? Thanks in advance

I Find that a upright freezer is easer to stack Meat and fish in. As far as brands go there are about equal in quality.
Kenmore 13.7 about $450.00 at sears

Couple small chest freezers or a stand up. I don't like having a big one because it gets so much stuff in it you can't keep up with what you've got.

one deer worth of processed meat usually fills maybe a 40qt cooler? I may be overestimating the size of my cooler though? Probably closer to 30
ETA: an upright freezer is much preferable to a chest style.

Someone needs to make a cylinder type freezer with a lazy susan on it. That way you can rotate it to keep the older stuff in the front. With the way freezers are now, you have to take everything out to put the new meat in the back. I just get lazy and use the new meat.

I have a 5 ft^3 chest freezer and it could easily hold 3 deer and lots of fish.

I bought the biggest upright freezer Sears had. I can't remember how many cu. ft or $, but it has plenty of room. I'm pretty meticulous about how I cut and package my game. I probably average about 8-10 deer every year (between Mississippi and LA), ducks, limits of turkeys, turtles and fish and such. Between my big upright, and my kitchen freezer I usually fit everything. Of course all that probably doesn't fit at once. We eat deer about 3-4x per week during deer season, then once or twice per week the rest of the year.
I suppose I got sidetracked there. From my experience the upright works best. You will stack it better because you can see it better, and you won't end up with a bunch of wasted meat that spoils on the bottom.
Also, get a food-saver, the best one you can afford.

Uprights are best as for as storage, but chest types freeze a bit better when power goes out. Spend the extra money for the best unit you can buy. That will save money as for as power useage over the years.

Uprite is better IMO, my kids have moved out so we didn't cook as much this year and I have a little meat left over from last season, but I'll be able to easily keep it separated rather than piling new onto old. Good luck!

Exactly what Sherrifftaylor said, I would avoid the chest freezer because you will wind up piling new meat on top of old and wind up with alot of old meat that ends up getting thrown out. That has been my experience.

Chest types get colder, but if I remember correctly aren't they harder to defrost? The statements about the older meat getting lost at the bottom under the newer meet is very true. I lost a small chest type due to a compressor malfunction and when I cleaned it out...I had meat in there from 2+ years back.
Got a standup now...and it's easier to rotate the stock and keep the older stuff up front. Or on different shelves.

Cade, you got my prototype ready? I got a pecan-eating tree rat to put in it.
