I think the Kingsguards lines in that flashback are some of my favorite in the series.

And that illustration is awesome.

Friggen awesome. I still hear Roy Dotrice when I read this scene.

Thought Arthur Dayne would be taller.

"We swore a vow and now it begins."

They are great lines. This one is one that really makes my buy in to R+L = Jon. They swore a vow to Rhaegar to protect his son, the rightful king. And to them, he needed to be protected from the usurper.

This scene, more than anything, makes that more than obvious.

The fact that they haven't even touched on this in the show is more than troubling to me.

And as GRRM said in a recent interview: "They will have to deal with Rhaegar and Lyanna at some point."

The only way to do it, at this point, is to bring in Howland Reed. Or I guess they can have Meera or Jojen tell the story to Bran.

When Season 1 came and went with no mention of the TOJ, I knew that Martin had zero intention of sharing this secret on the show ahead of the books.

(In the event the show lasts 10 seasons and he takes 20 years to finish ASoIaF)

Martin's actually gone on record that he wishes they would deal with the flashbacks, visions, and history on the show, but time is obviously an issue.

I think they will heavily condense books 4 and 5 and make those into two seasons at worst. A lot can be cut from those books and they take place mostly at the same time.

Martin has also mentioned that budget is a big reason why some of the battle scenes get left off the show. Specifically, he mentions that horses are expensive.

To do a TOJ scene, you would need specially trained stunt doubles, armor, props, a Tower, horses, etc. It would be an extremely expensive scene...and relatively short.

The producers might be saving it for a later season.

Not if they stuck to the dream Ned had in GOT. It would be no different than any other scene. We never witnessed any fighting in his dream

I'm with Cotton -

How expensive could it have been to have one armored young Ned ahorse and six other waxing/waning "wraiths" ala CGI confronting 3 armored (elaborately, so, I'll concede) men in front of a tower in a desert landscape...with NO fighting involved.

Cut to young Ned at a dying Lyanna's bedside in a castle-like tower room...

There is no excuse for omitting this scene based on $.

Yeah TOJ wouldn't be expensive.

Ned on horse, Howland and 6 other guys on foot. Versus the 3 Kingsguard. Confrontation, bad arse scene of Kingsguard killing a guy, cut to Ned, bloodied and battered, by Lyanna's side.

I agree with Cotton, as well. It could be done with limited resources.

I suspect that the TOJ will be in the show at some point, and I wonder if there are going to go all out in that season.

I think its quite possible that scene, in a flashback, will be the "revelation" to Jon of his parentage. Last season, possibly.

In fact, I'm willing to bet, that at some point, they do an entire episode of flashback, history to the War. Show the Trident, the ToJ, the death of the Mad King, etc.

need to refresh my memory.

This is Rhaegar with the long hair? Right after the mad king died? Trying to remember why they are at the tower of Joy?
