I have a centipede lawn and want to get some ideas for this winter to keep my grass really green. Has anyone put out winter rye grass or fescue etc during the winter along with their original lawn??? Is it possible? I have seen it in my neighborhood before, how do you do it?

My sentiments exactly. I can't wait for the first frost so I can take a break from mowing.

Exactly

Who cares if your grass is or isn't green in the winter?

Another dead grass lover here. I also want an anti-fertilizer for summer.

Over seed with Rye grass, though I'd never do any such thing. It's just crazy.

Yeah, why would I want to pay my yard guy even more money?!?

As for the "I already have a riding lawnmower" statement, if you want to mow during the fall when there are animals to hunt and football to watch, you need to rethink your life.

if you go with rye, make sure you go with a perennial turf-type rye. You don't want that nasty cattle grazing annual rye. If you have a Lesco nearby, that's where I've gotten mine from before. It was a blend of perennial ryes. It is much more expensive than the annual cattle fodder rye, but makes a beautiful turf.

Also, be aware that if you don't kill it or keep your lawn cut really short come spring time, it can shade out, outcompete and thwart your centipede. Afterwards you may have weed problems if you allow it to weaken your base lawn. You could really set yourself back if you don't give your centipeded a fighting chance come spring.

I went to a guy's house around Christmas a few years ago and he had planted rye for the winter. Not only did his yard look weird and stand out, it was a PITA to keep up because it would take days to dry out after a front pushed through.
