Ok so I pick little angus up from school and he asks me if he can shoot his pellet gun. I told him sure I don't care but I have to feed up and won't be back for a little while. I got held up longer than I thought and when I get back LA is underneath a tree fully decked out in camo. He was in a brown top field I had just cut for hay. Decoys out and everything. Dove season isn't in here yet and he may our may not have killed 3 of them. So do you scold him real bad for doing this, just let it go, or make him go back out cause three won't feed us?

No scolding. Just explain to him about rules just like the rules around the house.

Explain to him about taking game and seasons. Then send him back out, especially if he is under the age of 10

That's awesome that he did that, but tell him about seasons and the need to follow rules

Well, did he or didn't he?

Not sure about real bad but he needs to know there are laws and you/he can get in trouble.

We just had a good discussion on it and I think he gets it. Also a remington 1200 advantage pellet gun 2 head shot and one wing. If gj is lurking then that is maybe

well, i do too, but if i did something illegal and my daddy had already told me not to do something, i got my arse whipped... I ain't saying you have to whip him or anything, but i don't think he should just get away with it, at least without a serious talk'n to, explaining why rules are in place, etc....
again, just my opinion and i realize things were different in the 50's,,, but you asked...

Don't discourage him, but let him know why what he did was wrong

I did ask and I appreciate everybody's response. He did get talked to and to be honest if I thought he needed it I would have whooped his arse. And for certain it is different now than when you were growing up as well as when I was. It is actually a parenting fail on my part and if a arse needs to be whooped it's mine. But there is this little part of me that is proud as hell of him

I would sternly tell him what he did wasn't right, but let him know that you're not mad at him. He needs to learn the rules and why they're there. Depending on how old he is I'd also tell him he shouldn't be shooting without you, and may fuss at him for that.

I'd then go brag to my friends how awesome my kid is.

Was he even aware that doves had a hunting season? He could have been shooting birds like any kid would do year-round, and they just happened to be doves.

Either way, sounds like LA has killing in his blood!

Did he know about the season? If not don't worry about it. I get the since that you're really good dad to that young man and explained why it wrong to shoot them now but I'd be beaming with pride as well.

I have had sole custody of him since he was 2. He is a pretty accomplished hunter for his age and while deep inside I know he knew about the seasons and I had a good talkin to with him I am just proud he chose doing that over playing video games our watching tv.
