Need recommendations for "real local dive BBQ". Not interested in real touristy places. Anyone has suggestions for down and dirty don't miss places?

you need to have Gate's in KC, even though some may find it tourist-y

There is only one "unique" barbecue in Memphis and it is the "dry" ribs at Rendezvous. All the rest are basically the same.

For the best barbecue sandwich drive about 90 miles north to the Dixie Pig in Blytheville, Arkansas. Order the brown chopped pig with slaw and an order of fries.

The best all round barbecue restaurant is 17th Street Bar and Grille. There are a few locations in Illinois. Mike Mills owns the place and has won Memphis in May something like six times. He was the first Yankee to do so. WARNING: 17th Street has great meat, but the slaw, baked beans, red beans and rice and most other sides are absolutely awful. I can honestly say that those are the worst red beans and rice I was ever unable to eat.

ETA: As for Kansas City go to the Mizzou board at Tigerboard.com. I've never been there, but many people have told me that the best barbecue in KC is Oklahoma Joe's.

I had Rendezvous twice recently, and it was better than I remember.

In Kansas City, I recommend Oklahoma Joe's. Jack Stack is far from a dive.....they have a location at The Plaza. Gates and Arthur Bryant aren't what they used to be now thAt they have locations on every corner. I've never been to any of these in the link below, but I've seen the DD&D episode and they all look more like what you're interested in. I know there's an App you can get that shows all restaurants that have been featured on TV. That may help when you're in Memphis & KC.

LC's BBQ in Kansas City is the best BBQ I've ever had.

Not impressed with Central BBQ in Memphis. A big disappointment considering all the recommendations for the place. In KC, Oklahoma Joes was great. The ribs were awesome and brisket and pulled pork was on the money. Jack Stack was also good but not as good as OJs. Arthur Bryants brisket was also good. Would hit any one of those three again if I had the time. Thanks to those who suggested these places.

For down and dirty I would say the Cozy Corner. Great food including smoked cornish hens, rib tips and BBQ bologna. Yes BBQ bologna! Good sweet potato pie too. I would go for lunch, the area can be pretty sketchy at night. The older lady that owns it has a pistol on her hip at all times.

ETA: That's Memphis, by the way.
