Baton Rouge area; I have 4 big oaks near the house that survived the storm but left me very uncomfortable (and my neighbor too). I was gonna look at having them removed, but don't have the slightest idea at good rates; and right now there are some guys starting to solicit for the jobs (one dude pressed me today to see if I'd pay 3 grand to get all 4 removed and leave them at the road). He of course left me his card.

What's a fair rate re trees? Probably need a crane.

I stayed at a friend's place Wednesday night bc he had power, and said he got an estimate of around $2k for one big tree in his yard. I don't have a clue, but if his estimate was the going rate, then I'd say $3k for 4 big oaks would be a pretty good price.

Make sure you pay someone to haul them off.......they may sit at your curb for 3-4 months.

Licensed insured vs mexicans. What happens when they drop a oak on your roof by mistake?

They had the best prices a couple of years ago when we got estimates for our trees.

You can check the list of licensed arborist in Louisiana for other companies also.

$1000 -$2000 per tree depending on size and location is about the normal range. If you are in EBR they are required to remove the tree as well.

Urgency= Big $$$$$. If you can wait, you will save money.

As a contractor who uses subs, I would recommend validating their insurance coverage. Don't just let them present you with a certificate and think everything is ok.

$3000.00 for 4 trees is outstanding if insusurances are current.
Also. Be sure to check with waste pickup before leaving anything curbside. Hate to see you have to pay pickup later.

^^^^^^ Excellent points.
Even if they present an insurance certificate, the only way to be sure it to call that company and confirm that the arborist has policy that is currently in effect.

You will have current dates of coverage on the General Liability certificate of insurance. $3k is a good deal for four large oaks but still get a few estimates. And as said if you can wait for a couple months or so and let the rush subside and the cost might come down. Chances are it at least won't go up. Not all tree removal services are licensed arborist nor do they have to be. If you are trimming or pruning that is important but removal it's not that critical. You certainly want someone who knows what they are doing and Baton Rouge has a bunch of good tree removal companies. Just do a bit of homework.

Also, be sure to check their coverage limits on liability. The legit companies will carry 1//2 million. The fly by night will try to get by on 50,000. Try dropping a tree on your house and getting it repaired for50k if lawyers have to get involved.

Workers comp should also be verified. Don't fall for the "we are all part owners. Owners don't have to be insured on their workers comp".

The game out there right now for these contractors is " charge the customer like we are fully licensed and insured, even though we don't have those expenses"

Good luck to every one
