My saw is acting up. I can get it to start and run for about 10 seconds but it then starts to sputter and dies. Plug and air filter are OK. Any thoughts? It's a Poulan Pro 42cc. Thanks!

There your first problem...

j/j...probably old or bad gas, drain tank, pull apart carb...clean all parts and pieces with carb clearner, reassemble put in fresh gas/oil mix and get to work.

I really hate to knock a man's equipment, but a butter knife would be more useful than a poulan. You have bad gas, or bad fuel line, or dirty carbs. It's not worth fixing. Get a Husqvarna or Stihl and never look back. And that's the God honest truth.. I will never ever own another Poulan!!!

Couldn't believe how it turned my fuel lines to jelly.

dump out gas/oil mix, pourin about 2 oz of lacquer thinner. pull tuil it starts then run about 15-20 seconds. stop, then dump out remaining lacquer thinner and put gas/oil mix back in. should clean out gunk/residue from system.

I have burned up 2 poulan pro saws and a McCulloh Wild Thing all within the first two days of using them

Could try taking off the air filter and spraying B12 carb cleaner in it. Put good gas/oil mix in and you should be good. I am being honest with you, trash it and go get a better one. It is always nice to know that a saw will start when you really need it

I agree with everyone else, trash it and get a husky or stihl.

They shoulda named that brand "pull on".

Wasn't Poulan made in Shreveport I itially?

Anyway, going to be lots of limbs to pick up Thursday morning. Get the saws sharpened.

While there is no question that the current / recent Poulans are crap, the older ones are just fine. Especially for light use.

I have an early 80's model that is still running strong and I use it fairly often, true, mostly light duty stuff.

They have a fairly large following and still command good money used. Only big downside to it is its fairly heavy.

agreed I know of some older models that still cut pretty good. Biggest problem with poulan is they put cheap oiling systems in and they do not like to be stored for long periods of time.

My Husky I can go 6 months and never touch it...pick it up prime it and in 3 pulls or less it will be fired up.

The biggest thing with any of them (or any small engine) is not to leave fuel inthem for long periods. I always run mine empty before storing.

My Dad on the other hand never does this with his Husky and it starts right up just like you say.

I leave fuel in my Stihl and starts every time, even after sitting up for 6 months. Let's hope it starts tomorrow.
