Wine with a twist off cap isn't always bad. Plumpjack reserve is $200 a bottle and cade estate Howell mountain is $150. Both have screw tops. A ton of Oregon producers believe in this because of the "green" concept behind it and the lack of TCA or cork taint. However hob nob is pretty "inexpensive" juice. Don't shy away from all wine with "stelvin closures" as they are called by industry professionals. Screw top sounds negative, stelvin sounds scientific.

Just open it and put it on the counter. Once all the good stuff is gone and your guest have a buzz it will “taste” just fine.

It's okay if you want to judge them. That's crappy wine.

Wow something actually educational on here thank you!

I may or may not be drinking crappy wine. Maybe I should consult the gurus of the food and drink board to let me know if I should enjoy this or not

This is how I roll as well. I didn't realize until just recently that wine came in bottles.

Less offensive than bringing beer.

Sounds like you are a ball of fun out there in El Paso.

I'll drink beer if someone wants me to try something but I will take mondavi over beer any day.

I've never tried the HobNob Malbec, but I promise you that there are some very decent wines these days that have a screw/twist cap. You're going to see synthetic "cork" and twist off more and more.

I've seen plenty of synth corks but never a twist off. I'm shocked because I drink a 750 a night usually.

If you drink a bottle of wine a night and have never seen a screw top, well...
I don't even.
I don't even.

When guests bring wine to my house, I usually open it and drink it with them. And as others have said, twist off is not a sign of quality. Probably 90% of wines are meant to be drunk within a year or two and aren't disadvantaged by a screw cap. At least you know it won't be corked.
Oh, and if you're drinking a 750 a night, you should probably learn this:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

The shittiest wine I'll drink is Liberty School.

The 90% rule on early drinkers with screw tops is half true. Probably 90% of all screw top bottles made are meant to be drank early, but maybe 65% of the different wines/labels are that way. There are some really really good and potentially long lived wines getting placed with stelvin. There is another glass closure you see on some wines like Sineann and Whitehall Lane Reserve series Cabernets.

In other words 90% of all screw top bottles produced are early drinking wines. However, probably 65% of all of the different brand of wine fall under that rule. Basically, it's all about the big wineries with lots of volume vs the little guys that don't make much but use a screw top.
