This thread has convinced me that a want to do an AR build. Might do a tactical 12 as well. I have a 9 shot 22 revolver that has always kept me comfortable for home defense. But now I'm aggravated.

I always respected the desire of others to own an ar but after Katrina I saw the need for me to own one...

This is the first non-sarcastic honest answer I've seen, the rest are just being defensive and or purposely dickish

After the 1st page I was going to come post saying that the people on this board are some of the most closed-minded idiots on TD. Then I decided that I should read the whole thread to give them a shot at redeeming themselves.

Seeing that you say this was the 1st legit answer makes me realize that my 1st impression was spot on.

Nothing but a bunch of overly defensive, paranoid, idiots on this board. I won't be paying a second visit here.

Pages 3 & 4 had some decent answers, but still had some defensive remarks mixed in.

I don't care if people own them honestly, I know the crazies would find a way to kill regardless. I don't see the problem with knowing who owns each gun via serial numbers though.

Yeah. I just read through them. Seriously, the good posters around here need to make sure the shitty extremist posters don't mess up their board or give it a bad name. This thread left a bad taste in my mouth and I'm all for the 2nd amendment.

If you don't own or know how to use a firearm.....

Keep in mind what went on in new orleans was only 48-72 hours away from being an average American city.....

Imagine a link in the power grid being down for two weeks in any city..........

Good luck calling 911

1. You've been watching too many movies

2. What does that have to do with anything?

oh noz, please don't go...wait come back...no seriously gtfo you won't be missed.

Here's the thing. You say people here are ignorant etc. What you fail to understand is that to the firearm enthusiast the OP is the ignorant arse. An educated person would know that it is up to every individual to enjoy their life in the way they choose. Why come to a board filled with firearms enthusiast and try to stir shite up with a troll that is almost as common as the "what's better 9mm, .40 or .45" argument. The real question is, why does is matter to you that I enjoy owning/shooting firearms?

no shite?

just like most people, i own guns because i have the right to. i see it no differently than spending money on most hobbies, with the added benefit of having the means to protect myself and my family should the need arise.

i think i may make a trip to the range today.

Why are we close minded? Your post tells me that the government should tell people what they can and cannot buy and own.

Who is close minded?

GFY and DIAF.

I guess I'll be the one to say it.

I own "assault weapons" so that if I ever need to kill a whole bunch of people or one heavily armed, highly trained person, I have the best possible chance of doing so.

Same reason I own body armor, NVGs etc.

For some, myself included, guns are fun to shoot, collect, clean, and take care of.

For me, it's a form of recreation and entertainment.

You could call it a hobby.

I'm not so much into killing animals unless they are a hazard (poisonous snakes, nutria rat, coyotes).

I don't even feel like I need a gun to defend myself but I can understand why others would.

The AR-15s, AK-47s, and other assault rifles are convenient for a sporting shooter such as myself.

When I go shooting, I usually shoot a lot so the high capacity magazines, affordable ammunition, and the semi automatic feature of the rifle is beneficial.

Moreover, assault rifles are not nearly as deadly as most standard hunting rifles that are designed to kill large animals.

Whereas a semi automatic assault rifle is designed to wound a man.

See the video below.

The Truth About AK-47 Firepower

Here is my analogy:

A top of the line baseball bat is to baseball what a top of the line AR-15 is to the sporting shooter.

Yes, the baseball bat is lethal weapon, but in only the rarest of cases (self defense) would I ever consider using it that way.

What really pisses me off is the inability of a sporting shooter to easily get a sound suppressor for a firearm.

Why do I have to wait 6 months to a year and go through a bunch of legal shite to acquire a device to lower the sound of my firearm? (especially when I can already buy the firearm itself without wait)

It's a safety issue for me, guns are very loud and over time could cause hearing damage. Yes, I use earplugs and even the battery powered hearing muffs but it's annoying when I could have a device that would make the headgear unnecessary.

Seems a little silly to me.
