College football hierarchy

quote:

Kings
* Alabama, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas and USC.

Ten years ago, LSU was coming off its first outright SEC championship in 15 years, having upset Phillip Fulmer's second-ranked Tennessee squad. Four months after this column ran, the Tigers knocked off the Vols in Atlanta again en route to their second BCS championship in five years. While LSU solidified itself as a bona fide national power, Tennessee fired Fulmer a year later and sank further into a decade-long bout of mediocrity.

The "ESPN, CBS, Herbstriet, etc. etc. don't respect LSU" bitching and moaning is pathetic. The ESPN that "completely dismisses" LSU, is the same one that featured them on Gameday 3 times last year.

I feel disrespected that Mandel would place any other team next to LSU in the top tier.

I would agree that we are at King Status now. Two more MNCs and we're there for life.

You should read the article to determine the criteria for being a king. Its more about national perception and recognition.

Absolutely ND is a king. How the hell else can someone suck so bad year after year and be a Top 10/title contender still?

These are historical kings maybe.. but they are all a tier lower than the rest now.

wake up....sniff the caffeine.

twice on vacation this year I overheard people talking college football. in orlando a table full of big10 guys were talking about their teams and after everyone remarked how strong they were going to be one guy adds, "doesn't matter, we still can't beat LSU, USC and Bama." at a marina bar in carolina three guys were talking tarheel football and again one guy after saying they will be improved says, "I just hope that one day our program will be a name like LSU, Mich., USC or Ohio St."

the fact is....we are a highly respected and feared elite national power and everyone other than the rantards and cyper-punks know it.

in the last 12yrs. we have truely experienced the golden age of Tiger football and with the renovation of Tiger Stadium and surroundings we are creating a game day experience that will be second to none.

FSU, Miami, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Tennessee should not be on that list.

None of the above have sniffed a NC over the last 10 seasons.

I think a lot of people are missing the point of this article. Mandel's whole argument is that a school's place in the grand scheme of things, and in the perceptions of the average fan, shifts very slowly. It's not just about how many wins and losses you've had over the last few years, but about how recognizable your "brand" is, how strong your following is both locally and nationally, and how much negotiating clout you have in the changing marketplace of college football. Given these considerations, Florida State and (especially) Notre Dame are still definitely "Kings." I agree about Miami, though--I think they've slipped more than Mandel acknowledges.

To put things in perspective, look at it this way: how many years out of the last five would Michigan have beaten Boise State? I would argue MAYBE twice, at best (more likely once). But would anyone dispute that Michigan is still more of a college football "big boy?" I didn't think so.

Anyone who claims LSU doesn't get enough respect from the media should be ignored. Obviously have no clue what they are talking about.

Other than the "holy catholic mystique" of ND, they are irrelevant to the discusion. They re not ever mentioned in the discussion because of recent history.
