Who's been to Mosca's?

We are thinking of having a celebratory dinner there this week, and no one has been.
I've heard it's pretty authentic and classic Italian - maybe a favorite of the old mafia guys. And I saw it on Treme... if that means anything.

I've been probably 30 times. It was always an old favorite of my family's.
BUT...
The last two times we went, we were VERY disappointed. We only went the last time because my aunt was in town and she had to go...and she regretted it too.
The portion sizes have gotten smaller and the prices have gone up. Our whole chickens were TINY. I'd say they were probably about 3 lbs. each. Everything was overcooked.
Every single one of us left feeling like we'd gotten the rear admiral.
At this point, I feel like they're going on reputation alone.
There are far too many incredible choices in New Orleans to opt for sub par food and insane prices.

This is what I always just tell myself when the idea of Mosca's comes up. To drive across the river to eat at that little shack for those prices just doesn't do it for me.
I admit, I didn't do it right last time. Just me and the wife. I get that you should go with a group and pass everything around, etc.
It just seemed like I was paying premium prices to eat in Avondale in a shack for homestyle Italian food.
Andouille will be in the thread in a minute to say I'm low class and should just eat at Olive Garden because I didn't kiss the ring of Mosca's.

Old school mobbed up Italian. Worth going to at least once.

No, if a place is in a down cycle and long time diners notice problems, it is something to watch. I laugh when first timers go there and complain about rude waiters, no credit cards, no reservations, they need to be a place where Tif-a-nee will be their server tonight.
They usually close for most of August to go to Italy, I might schedule a trip in September to check it out.

Very good food. Get the chicken a la grande. You will not be disappointed. And bring cash. Last time I was there they were still not accepting cards.
