Questions about a French Press coffee maker

So I bought a French Press the other day and I was wondering what is the proportion of water to grounds that some of y'all who use one use? I can't seem to get it right every cup I make seems a little watered down.

Welcome to the world of coffee ballas!
I have 2 of them, both Bodum. One is smaller than the other.
IN the large one I use 6 scoops of coffee, in the small one I use 4.
I pour in the boiling water and let it steep for 5 minutes.
What comes out would not be considered weak or watered down.
OTOH it's quite strong and full of rich coffee flavor, ballin all the way.

Pressing too fast.

Are you using good coffee? That matters too.

I make the mistake of drinking too large a cup and then I'm jittery like a crack whore hamster for about 3 hours.

This might do better over there.

I have the same question...

eta: i never go to the food board, so in before it gets moved there....
I usually use Sam's or Costco whole-bean French or medium roast, course ground. It's as good as most other whole bean stuff in the stores.
about 18oz of water (2-cup liquid measure filled to brim) gets 3 heaping scoops (the Bodum scooper).
If I fill the Bodum (this is the 34 oz) to the point where the coffee grounds are almost spilling over, then that gets 5-6 heaping scoops (not sure of exact ounces of H2O). 6 is on the strong side.
I used to do 4 heapers for 16 oz, but I've toned it down. I've found that for higher water volume, you don't increase exactly proportionally the coffee--use a little less coffee.
It's an art, not a science. Oh, and don't let it steep for more than 5 minutes or so.

i used to be religious about Community. Hit or miss to me now (plus not everywhere in Atlanta or Missoua).
I'm also not dogmatic about french press any more. I have found good Kourig cups at my office (always do 6oz max, especially if someone else is paying for it--on number 2 of am now), and small drip maker with good cold water and good coffee is just fine and a good chage sometimes from the earthiness of the french press.

quote:Shame on you for using boiling water. Every serious coffee afficianado knows that using water over 205F causes the release of unwanted oils from the freshly ground coffee beans that will cause bitterness. Your water should be somewhere between 195F and 205F.

I have a six cup press. I use 7 scoops of coffee in it. I add cold water, then my coffee, then stir. I cover and place in the fridge for 24 hours. Cold brewed coffee is great, especially in the summer.
I also use my press for flavoring beer. I add things like hops, hibiscus, coffee, etc, and then add beer. Freshly flavored beer is the jam.

i usually bring to boil in kettle and then let it sit open for a sec to bring down 7-10 degrees. how do you get your water in that range?

Let it sit for longer.
The longer you let it sit the more bitter it will be. Optimum brewing is 200 degrees at around 4 minutes. Everyone likes their coffee different so trial and error will get you there.

I have an individual press that I use at the office and two regular sized ones at home (my wife drinks decaf, so she has to use her own so mine stays kosher).
But your problem is, as others have pointed out, not letting it steep for long enough.

I use 3 scoops (using the scooper that comes with the French press) - not overflowing scoops - along with about 14 ounces of water.
And yes, you are definitely not supposed to boil the water. Usually I microwave it for about 4.5 minutes at about 70% power level. That should get you very hot water, but not boiling.
4 minutes brew time, and then press down slowly and deliberately. That should do the trick.
