LSU has been ranked in the top 5 at some point each of the last 10 years (and all of the miles years) and in the top 10 each of the last 12 - assuming we start 2012 in the top 5. I think Oklahoma is the only other program that can boast those numbers. USC, Texas, Florida, and Ohio state are all close but have at least one season where they missed the mark.

Now folks will point out that the final rankings are the true measure of a team ( and they are right) and 2002, 2004, 2008, and 2009 were disappointments . But the fact that LSU finds its way into he top 5 is a measure of the sustainability of the program - we have never lost enough momentum to not find our way back in the nc hunt. I think these stats alone make an argument for LSU as the currently the top football program in the country.

If January had turned out a little better it'd be even more of a slam dunk

I was actually thinking about this the other day. There has not been a time in the past decade when I didn't have some hope at some part of the season that LSU would win the SEC or compete for a national title. It has been a great run and the way we are recruiting, it should continue throughout this decade as well. If we get to 2020 in the same shape as we are in now with a couple more national titles and 3-4 more SEC championships, you really have to begin to see LSU as one of the all-time great programs in college football. It is possible!

In the time frame given, absolutely.

Just depends on how far you are wanting to look back when looking to award such a title. If you're going back for 2 or 3 or even 4 years, the answer is Bama.

You can't be on the top of the mountain every year, but I'd like to see the numbers on teams being in the top 10 in November for a number of years in a row. That would remove undeserved preseason hype, and reflect a true perennial program. Especially for any team that isn't perceived as blowing through an easy conference.

Make the most of your BCS posts during the next two seasons lsumatt. Always good stuff.

Ha. Irony.

BTW, u didn't hear it from me, but ESPN loves USC. Kirk loves USC.

Most importantly, ESPN hates LSU.
