If you could hand pick any living author to write a series of sequels (or prequels) to the ASOIAF series, who would it be? I would go with Stephen King or Neil Gaiman. King because if you want bloody and profane, look no further. Gaiman because the man can tell a ridiculously fantastical story, but keep the characters human and sympathetic.

No one. Except maybe GRRM if he really felt there was more to explore in that world.

Let's get GRRM to finish the damn series first before we start talking sequels.

GRRM has already written three short prequels that were pretty good. Not on the level of ASOIAF, but worth reading. And not sure the story needs anymore sequels outside of what still needs to be written by the original author...

but King has some weird shite in some of his books--only got through the first 2.5 of the Dark Tower series. Haven't read Gaiman, although I've got a couple on my amazon wish list.

It was a harmless question meant to spark a discussion, but I'll call George and tell him to finish up.

Gaiman can get surreal, but man can he tell a story.

Okay, if not GRRM, then I don't know who. I love Neil Gaiman, but he is way more of a surrealist fantasy writer. I can't recall any of his books ever having been set in some form of historical context.

Why not David Benioff, the TV series head writer? That guy is a freaking genius. He has written historical fiction (see "City of Thieves"), and while it wasn't set in a fantasy world based on medieval times around the time of the War of the Roses, he clearly has a penchant for that time in history. Plus, he's got a ton of insight into the series being that he is writing the show for HBO. Additionally, his writing ability is right up there with Michael Chabon and Neil Gaiman. I think he could do the series justice, while putting his own spin on it.

Margaret Weiss & Tracy Hickman gets my vote. They did an amazing job with their War of Souls series for dragon lance.

Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse - I love the story and characters they wrote for Lost.

King and Gaiman wouldn't even be close to the same tone of ASOIAF really. King doesn't have anywhere close to the skill to pull off something ASOIAFlike, and I say that as a fan of much of King's work. Gaiman has the skill, but his writing style doesn't really mesh well with Martin's work IMO.

I'd say Joe Abercrombie, as they have similar styles and worlds.

Why not David Benioff,

I don't know if it's been discussed, but he's already given Benioff and Weiss the major plot lines and necessary framework for the end of the series and has entrusted them to finish off ASOIAF if he dies early.

I'd at least wish to see a few chapters by him. A few of a wandering Arya maybe.

Both Benioff and Weiss earned MFAs from some of the best creative writing programs on Earth. Benioff has proven his writing chops more than Weiss in terms of novels, but I would be excited to see what the two of them, or either of them alone, could produce in the ASOIAF world.

after some of their 'new' S2 scenes, I could not disagree more.

I've read this, but nothing about

quote:

has entrusted them to finish off ASOIAF if he dies early.
From what I've seen, he's given them the basic plots going forward but it was so that they wouldn't go changing up the storyline too much in their show
