Boating mistake that could potentially save a life

Ill start by saying I've been driving boats by myself since I was 6 years old... This is the first time that I have ever felt like I could have put someone in harms way. I am only sharing in hopes that another does not make this same mistake. Ok. Here goes....
We were having a little Sunday funday on belle river. We had made our way kneeboarding down to Stephensville around 2:30 when we decided we were gonna start heading back towards the camp. Well one of the little girls that was with us wanted to tube back to the camp.
Mistake #1: I failed to remember that the media bass tournament guys would be making their way back to doirons for 3:00pm.
Mistake #2: letting her tube on this area of the river
As you can see.. The river curves left.. Then right... Well on the curve left she swings out right on the tube... No problem. On the curve right.. She swings out LEFT. Big problem.
Mistake#3: when I start to make the curve right there is a bass boat heading straight for us. Instincts is to turn right to avoid hitting said bass boat. Wrong decision with a person on a tube as it would throw her into the direction of the bass boat. I then realize that my bayboat is between the bass boat and the tube pretty much the entire time during these couple seconds..
Knowing that they probably didn't see her I let off the gas and start waving and directing their attention towards her. He gets off pad and avoids her. Cursing me (deserved). Luckily, the guy wasn't going 80 and was able to slow down. It wasn't THAT close of a call, as no one in the boat even realized the potential danger at stake. But I realized the potential for disaster in this scenario and wanted to share with others so that they wouldn't make the same mistake. This is the first time I've ever pulled a tube through this area and it will be the last.

Good thing you realized what was happening in time.

Well documented post!

Yes. It could have. The river is a lot larger than my drawing but that's just to get an idea of what's going on...
The river was LOADED with boaters this past weekend. I think it's really stupid that they restricted that tourney to just the lake verret side (forcing bass boats running 70mph everywhere to be mixed in with pleasure boaters) not making excuses for my actions though bc I was in the wrong

sounds like your experience prevented the mistake.
a less experienced driver might not have had to foresight to do so.

The problem is you were tubing...
This could have been avoided if you were wakeboarding

quote:definitely. If I would have continued on my first instinct to make a hard turn right to avoid the bass boat it would have slung her right into him. Once I realized that... I basically went straight towards him making him divert off course so I wouldn't sling her towards them anymore than I already did. We're only talking about a few seconds that all this took place. My experience + his experience probably kept something bad from happening

Jeebus, WTF is this the 1980s? A fricking kneeboard and a tube? Only thing left is some old short tennis shorts and a wooden slalom ski. I bet you have a wooden slalom ski don't you?

I wakeboard. We have a tube and kneeboard for people who can't wakeboard. And I don't wakeboard behind a bay boat.

Could have been a bad afternoon.

Damn, that could have been a disaster

Easily could've been a deadly accident with less experienced boaters.
That's why I prefer to do my skiing/wakeboarding/tubing on a big open lake like Old River. Less traffic, less bass fishermen, and less curves.

my father n law swung me into the marsh one time on a wakeboard... it was better than an oncoming boat.

I was kidding. Wakeskates are where it's at though. I'm too old to blow out an ACL, or worse, with wakeboard bindings.
