key word here is MADE. Tiger atheltics are wholly self-sufficient. In fact, they donated $10M back to the university. Quit falting the Athletic Department. They pay their own way. Cut some of the stupid shite (like unnecessary degree programs) and you will be more solvent. fricking whiners.

LSU: Okay, we'll start by using our funds to run a "sky is falling" campaign against the state through negative ads. Then we'll send out all kinds of negative press. Finally, we'll go ahead and pass the cost off to the students by raising tuition, maybe cut a few lower level people just to show how bad it is. How's that sound?

yup.

You don't find it a little disconcerting that our alma mater is essentially an NFL factory, and continues to undermine the importance of academics? Which is, first and foremost, the purpose of school.

State of Louisiana: Wait, don't you think you should wait until we tell you how much money we have available? LSU: No, were LSU. SoLA: Yeah, well we don't have that kind of funding available. You'll have to justify this kind of budget to the state. LSU: Why? Were LSU? SoLA: Well see, the economy is still in a recession. Revenues are down, uncertainty reigns, and the state simply cannot afford to continue to write a blank check to the University. You'll have to come up with more efficient ways to make do.

You really don't get it do you. There certainly is fat to trim at LSU, but we're the largest research university in the state. We also have one of e worst donation rates in the country and one of the lowest endowments. We also have a ridiculously large student size. The mechanical engineering senior project this year had triple the amount of normal students with e same number of teachers. Classes will be cut, and people will be forced to to wait semesters and possibly extend their period in school because of it. Also, it will kill our research opportunities for students looking to go to grad school. This is terrible for anyone going to LSU who wants to continue their education after or finish as soon as possible and receive e approximate attention in difficult classes.

WE ARE frickED.

Not counting tax breaks, the state has spent a billion dollars in the past 4 years on corporate welfare and the state's revenue projections have fallen short every year.

couldn't carve out some of that for LSU? priorities.

So what programs are they looking to cut? LSU doesn't have any shortage of worthless majors.

Although there really need to be less 4 year schools in the state.

What other ones do you really need? Hell I wouldn't be opposed to cutting everything other then just Spanish. If you want to learn another language buy Rosetta Stone or go to their country. Don't waste money taking it at LSU where you're really not going to learn much anyways.

Yep. LSU has one too many Vice Provost's. You don't need one in every damn college dept.

Honestly, it was the lack of stability at LSU that scared me away from going there one year ago.

Louisiana doesn't need grambling, la. tech, and NWLA all open as four year universities in the northwest corner of the state .. pick one and drop the other two to two-year feeder JUCOs

There was serious consideration for LaTech to absorb LSU-Shreveport, but I think that has been shelved. Absolutely there are too many 4 year universities that could be combined to eliminate redundancy and waste. Tech in north Louisiana and LSU in the south and eliminate many of the others. LSU remaining the flagship of course.

LSU always takes the spotlight here, but from my experience there, I would say Northwestern is the best school in Louisiana. I would argue that we should make LSU the feeder school and Northwestern the flagship

I hope this is sarcasm.

I think the state constitution prevents cuts to most state programs except for education and maybe health care. Maybe someone who knows can elaborate.

That's a convenient half truth.

They can cut whatever they want during legislation. What happens is the governor approves X amount of statuatirily dedicated funding for specific departments and programs. later in the year when they realize they aren't going to collect as much money as budgeted, they need to make cuts and the only areas that aren't mandated by legislation are within higher Ed and healthcare. they can also make department heads stop spending money on expenses but it's limited in scope.

the house wants to give the governor a menu of items that he can cut in this scenario but the governor opposes it because it's not in line with political strategy.
