Ziller's column today on the draft.
Good info, some of which has been stated here before. With some interesting thoughts on those players in this drafted quoted at the bottom.

1. Ignore your immediate strengths and weaknesses. There wasn't exactly a whole lot of size for OKC to chase in '09 -- Blake Griffin and Hasheem Thabeet were taken Nos. 1 and 2, and Jordan Hill was the only other big man taken in the top 10 -- but the Thunder needed bigs more than they needed a perimeter scorer. It didn't matter. Instead of reaching for Hill or dealing with Memphis to grab Thabeet, they went with the player they felt was the best available: Harden. In the history of the draft, especially at the top, the lesson time and time again is to pick the best player available.

2. Groom for a role that can expand. You can't put whipped cream back in the can. The same is true of offensive responsibility in the NBA. It's so, so hard to give a player free reign on the court, then constrict his role when conditions change.
quote:
3. Let blossom! Scott Brooks has continuously given Harden bigger roles not only in the grind of the regular season, but in crunch time and in the playoffs. This is the biggest lesson of Ginobili: even reserves can be the most important players some nights.

There are some potential Hardens in the 2012 Draft. Brad Beal sticks out, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist could actually do the trick from a slightly different angle. Harrison Barnes, though, is my dark horse Harden candidate. On the right team that doesn't need his offense in high volumes immediately, he can learn how to play NBA defense, work on his driving game and build confidence. Then, BOOM. You have HARRISON BARNES. We'll see who picks him and how he develops, but my hopes along these lines are high.

I agree. I don't think we can go wrong if we take BPA. Odds are at least one of them will be a position of need.

James Harden is a fricking animal.
I also agree that in the NBA lottery, take best available. Don't wind up with a big man project b/c you "need" a big man. Almost every team needs a big man, but it never hurts to have someone that can put points on the board.

Agree with both of yall on BPA.
Also love Ziller's point about bench players. We usually think a lotto pick has to a starter or else he is a bust, but Manu (I know he wasn't a lotto pick) and Harden are showing that a core player can be your sixth man.
For me, it is an eye opening statement.

Yes. The Thunder will be set for many years to come, if they keep their core together.

A great sixth man is a very underrated part of a good team. If your bench has a high +/-, you will win a lot of games.

yep...i don't know how the thunder will keep him. he is gonna be a star. he's gonna be tired of being the third option at the end of games.

Why, though? Assuming they can pay him, why wouldn't he want to stay there?

i don't know how they will be able to with Durant and Westbrook's contracts. Harden will get paid.

idk. some guys have different motives...maybe he will want an opportunity to be the guy. Not saying he's anywhere near as good as these guys obviously, but MJ and Kobe would not settle for being the third option on a team.

I can't see OKC being able to afford Harden and Ibaka. You know some team will offer Harden a max deal or close to it.

I agree, but it's different when you have almost every position that can be upgraded.
How would y'all feel if we got the #2 pick and the top five players were shooting guards?

ya, almost certainly imo

Third option at the end of games??? This simply isn't the case.

he gets more opportunities at the end of games than Westbrook or Durant? don't think so

He's not going anywhere. OKC is a selfless team, lead by the humble KD. They will stay together for a long time and win many titles for the The Big Friendly.

that would be not good.
But thankfully any position we draft should improve our team

That's what I'm saying, it's easier said than done and easier when almost every position on your team needs to be upgraded.

1. Ignore your immediate strengths and weaknesses
Basically every team in the lottery will go BPA, regardless of position, unless you have a franchise PG. You cant play two 6 foot PGs together. Every other position can play at the same time.
Utah had Millsap and Jefferson. Then they traded for Favors. Then drafted Kanter 3rd overall.

did not know what to expect when i clicked on this thread. i thought james harden was missing or that this was like some where's waldo type spoof

They generally attack the match up that is most favorable. Durant is the alpha dog, no doubt. But to peg him as the concrete 3rd option is well...incorrect.
