Which MTV unplugged performance/album was better? Nirvana played more covers and obscure songs whereas AIC played more of the popular songs. Both Cobain and Staley were on top of there game vocally. It's a toss up for me but I give the edge to Nirvana due to the fact that they produced something completely different from what was expected from them. BTW, IMO these two shows are the best thing MTV has produced in their near 30 year history.

You should throw Korn in the mix too.I thought their unplugged kicked arse

But the answer is still Nirvana

I never even heard of Korn doing Unplugged. That doesn't sound like it'd be very good. Anyway Nirvana's was much better than AIC.

I have struggled with that question many times.

I don't understand those that say it is an easy choice.

Both were so very similar, musically.

I think I preferred the "no bullshite" approach of Alice in Chains. Kurt seemed so hung up on his image, like everything was "hey everyone, look at how mysterious and different I am". Came off a bit contrived.

However, I consider both among the greatest albums I have ever listened to. . .

I think Garth Brooks' unplugged is greatly underrated.

10,000 Maniacs had one of the greatest unplugged albums, too.

I prefer AIC 100x over Nirvana except with their Unplugged Albums. I think Nirvana's was/is better.

Not sure I agree with the Cobain being hung up on his image so much. He definitly could be miserable and whiney but that was a result of being a junkie just like Staley. Both were what they were, heroin junkies with incredible musical ability. I agree that both are great but I would say that Nirvana Unplugged is one of the greatest live performances of all time.

Nirvana - still one of my favorite albums

AIC's was awesome, but what Nirvana did that night was amazing.

Alice In Chains has better albums and is a much better band.

But...

Nirvana on this one easily, I am afraid.

Had Layne not showed up smacked out of his gord, and the band had a little more seriousness in their efforts, it could have been something greater.

We need to have a beer one night. I didn't even read your response until I posted mine. We both love The Cult and can talk about their pre-Rick Rubin stuff. That calls for a brewski.
